QUARTERLY MEETING,

"

A heavy thunderstorm towards the end of last week has been of material benefit to the links, and the greens have lost their fiery nature, rendering "putting more certain than for some time past. The entries for the various events were good, and the winner of the Cup in January, 1897, is again fortunate in getting his name engraved on it this year. Following are the returns handed in:-

TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY PRESS.

Sir, For the information of Mr. May and those of your readers who may perhaps endorse his remarks upon my letter, and in support of the views expressed in that letter, will you kindly allow me to state that in the course of my business, a business largely dependent upon the labour supply of the colony and therefore very much concerned in the suppression of plague, I have since 1895 (I was in England in 1894) had a sufficiently extensive acquaintance with plague matters and with persons afflicted with the disease to justify my writing upon the subject.

Mr. May's somewhat contemptuous reference to my ignorance of the matter must be my which after all do not affect the question.- excuse for troubling you with personalities

Yours truly,

EDWARD OSBORNE. Hongkong, 22nd April, 1898.

THE TREATMENT OF CHINESE PLAGUE PATIENTS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "DAILY PRESS," SIR,-Self preservation is the first law of nature. The Chinese are sensible to this as well as anybody else, and until they can be convinced that the Western medical treatment of plague patients is more beneficial than their own method, I think it is harmful to force them to take medicine which they detest.

The Chinese have no prejudice against vaccination, as some Europeans have, because they are con- vinced that the Western science in this respect is far superior to their own.

I favour the isolation of plague patients, and if I were to catch the disease myself I would have not the slightest objection whatever to being taken to the Hygeia, but before or after my removal I should hope to be allowed to make some arrangement with my family or friends for the management of my affairs.

Now with regard to the measures adopted for the suppression of the plague in 1894 and 1896 I wish to say something. I strongly object to the manner in which some of the officers carried out their duty, especially in the house to house visitation. These officers did not seem to have

any regard for female modesty, and they in vaded the sacred precincts of Chinese bed-cham- thoroughfares. Let me relate an incident that bers as if they were open markets or public

I was awakened by a rushing noise and when I happened in my house in 1896. One morning

find a European standing inside the door of my opened my eyes I was surprised and horrified to

bedroom. My wife had previously jumped out of bed and hidden herself behind it. Before I and walked out of the room again. I asked my could get up to address him he glanced round

servants afterwards whether he had obtained

their permission to enter my bedroom and they building situated in the Chinese locality, and said no. I occupied the top flat of a European

before my intruding visitor could reach my bed- room he had to pass the landing door into the corridor and through an adjoining room lead- ing to my bedroom, so that he could have knocked at three doors, which he omitted to do, before entering my room. Now, Mr. Editor, what would you do if the same thing had hap- pened to yourself ?—Yours truly,

CHAN LONG HIN.. Hongkong, 22nd April, 1899,
