Cash shares changed hands locally at 190 per cent. premium, and were purchased from Hong- kong on the same terms. Shares were also sold to Hongkong at 195 per cent. premium for 30th June delivery. The Hongkong rate is 190 per cent, with buyers, which is equal to 194 per cent. with exchange 173, and this we quote as the closing cash rate. There is no change in other Bank shares. Marine Insurance. -Yangtsze In- surance Association, Ltd.-The Directors' Report and Statement of Accounts to the 31st December last have been published for the meeting of shareholders called for the 22nd current, 1896.— The Working Ace uut of this and former years shews a credit balance of $187,345.15, which is $38,781.84 less thaa in the previous term. The Losses (assuming that the return premiuins paid on this year's account in 1897 are among the losses) amount to $206,691,56, equal to 48,41 per cent. of the premiums, against 47.26 per cent. in 1895. The Directors recommend the payment of n dividend of 10 per cent, which will absorb $18,000, and leave a balance of $139,343.15 to be carried forward. 1897.--The net premiums amount to $515,156.74, an exceed those of the previous year by $88,227.38. The loses rud claims paid amount to $289,154.62, and there are claims pending on known losses estimated at $165,000. The Directors therefore do not recommend the payment of any divi lend out of this year's business at present. The expenses amount 10 $85,836.43, equal to 16.61 her cent. of the premiums, against 18.58 per cent. in the previous year. The balance carried forward is $226,5!2.92, which is $29,918.16 less than in the previous year. premium on the 1,052 unallotted shares was $66,000, which has been added to the Reserve Fund, which now stands at $510,000. amount at credit of the Exchange and Investment Fluctuation Account is $85,511,27. No business has been reported in these shares. North-China 'Insurance shares have changed ban is at Tis. 1.98. Fire Insurance.-No local transaction is re orted. Shipping.-In Indo-China S.X. shares a large business has been done. Cash shares were sold to Hongkong early in the week at $61.59. Busi- ness was done locally at Tls. 46.50, 17.5 | cash, 'Fls. 47.50 for the 30th current, Tis. 50, 49, aud 50 for June, and Tls. 50 for July. Cash shares are wanted at Tls. 47. Sugar Companies.—A large holding of Perak Sugar Cultivation shares was forced off at Tls. 35. China Sugar Refining shares were placed for July delivery at $182.59. Mining-Raub Au-tralian Gold Mining shares were sold to Hongkong at $29 cash and $30 for the 30th June, and more are offering. Docks. Wharves and Godowus.-Business has been done in Boyd & Co. sbares at Tls. 197.5), S. C. Fain- ham & Co. shares at Tls. 173, Shanghai Dock shares, one Founders' at Tls. 200, and Ordin try at Tls. 75/80 cash, Tis, 77-5 ) for the 15th current, and Tls. 80 for the 30th June. and Shanghai and Hongkew Wharf shares at Tls. 122. Lands.- Shangbai Land Lavestment shires were placed at Tls. 92.50. Industrial.-In Cottoa Mill shares : E-Wos were placed at Tis. 101, Internationals at Tis. 110, Laon-Kung-Mows at Tls. 103/101 cush and Tle, 110 for the 30th June, and Soy Cace- at Tla. 510. Shanghai Ice shares were sold at Tls. 115 cash and for April at the same price, and for May at Tls. 116. Chign Flour Mill shares were placed at Tls. 55 and Tis 58 cash, and American Cigarette shares at T. 95 for the 31st August. Miscellaneons.—Shingh Waterworks shares were placed at Tls. 395 e un divi lend, and are offering on the same termus. Shanghai- Sumatra Tobicco shares have been in demand. and business has been done at Tls. 68/90 cash, Tis. 92 for June, Tis. 91 and 95 for July, and Tls. 94/96 for August. Shanghai Langkat tobacco shares have also improved, sales having been made at Tis. 250/295 cash, Tis. 320 for May, Tls. 325/335 for June, Tls, 340 for July and Tls. 360 for Angust. Hall & Holtz shares were sold at $40/41. Loans.-Sir per cent. Municipal Debentures were sold at Tis. 120 and 6 per cent. Land Debentures at the same price, plus the accrued interest in both cases. They are obtain-hence to Baltimore, able on the same terms.

TONNAGE.

HONGKONG, 15th April.-Since our last, there has been an active demand for steam tonnage and rates shew an advance on previous settlements.

Saigon to Hongkong ready medium-sized steamers command 42 cents per picul, large car:iers loading three weeks hence 37 to 38 cents per picul.

Hence to Japan ports 62 cents has been paid, for Yokohama, the closing weak at 56 cents per picul, for Kobe 60 cents has been effected, but closes at 45 cents per picul.

Bangkok to Hongkong, the demand is quieter at 45 outside and 50 cents inside the bar for small carriers.

Newchwang to Canton, 371⁄2 cents is offered, but 40 cents per picul is demanded.

Coal freights, Japan to Hongkong advanced to $1.80 per ton at which rate 2 fixtures were eflected and further tonnage is wanted at this figure-tu Sin- gapore, $2.23 per ton is offered.

Two steamers have been purchased locally by the United States Government The British steamer Nanshan, 1,344 tons net register for £32,0 0, and the British steamer Zairo, 675 tons net register for £18,000.

There is one vessel disengaged in port, registering 1,522 tons.
