CRICKET.

HONGKONG CRICKET CLUB V. NAVY, This match was begun on Saturday and con- cluded on Monday in a win for the club by ten wickets. The wicket was anything but satis- sactory and accounted for the curious scoring, Both sides had whipped up a strong eleven and, winning the foss, the navy batted first to the bowling of Vallings and Lethbridge. From 3 34 95

the very beginning none of the batsmen were at 28-91

home and the score only reached 89 a paltry 0 30-90

one for so strong a batting side, though it must 3 33-90 be admitted that the bowlers were in first class 0 25-89 fettle. The club's innings started auspiciously, 3 29-89 the first wicket putting on 35 runs, but after 025-38 this the wickets fell rapidly, and seven had 4 24-88 fallen for 70 before affairs altered for the better. 3 21 84 The effort ultimately resulted in 171 being 29 84 totalled, Campbell again playing a splendid not 24-84 out innings and carrying his bat right through 5 33-84 for 81.

He was missed before scoring, bat 022-83 afterwards played perfect cricket. Smith and 4 25-83 Langhorne were the only other notable scorers. 5 25-83

The navy started their second innings at 4 28-83 4.30 p.m.. but Smith and Lowson on this oc- 5 28-83 casion proved too much for them and when 7 25-83 stumps were drawn seven wickets had fallen for 028-82 53. On resuming yesterday Lowson quickly 3 32-82 bowled Shelford and Hastings, but an un- expected stand by Barton and Dix necessitated the club going to the wickets for a second time, the runs being knocked up off two overs of Shelford, without the loss of a wicket.

Second Innings,

ROYAL HONGKONG GÓLF CLUB.

The competition for final possession of the Captain's Cup, presented in 1897 by Mr. Gershom Stewart, has occupied the attention of those qualified to enter during the past ten days, and was concluded on Tuesday, the final being won by Mr. W. Taylor, who defeated his opponent by 4 up and 3 to play. The winner played a steady game throughout, the "fickle dame" somewhat favouring him. Starting with a good drive and a fine brassey approach the first hole was taken to his credit. The tenth hole was badly lost by by him in 4, and at the turn he led with 3 holes his opponent, who only secured a half, the follow- ing four holes being likewise halved:

The second class started at 1.20 and the first class at 1.30.

The boats got off very well together in their classes, with a strong east wind. All the boats were reefed, Phoebe and Ladybird double reefed. 16 The second class boats kept together all through the race, but in the A class Maid Marian soon got into first place. Erica and Chanticleer went too far into Causeway Bay and had to reach to Hung Hom point with free sheets, but arrived at the first mark second and third- in their class with Active next. This rock was rounded at 2.5 by Dart, with Payne, Ladybird, and Maid Marian within a few lengths, Erica and Chanticleer being about 1 and 2 minutes asterrn respectively.

In the beat up to Channel Rocks Ladybird, Chanticleer, and Erica got into close company, having passed both Payne and Dart. Maid- Marian was here' about 2 minutes ahead, which was increased to about 5 minutes on the ran down to Meyer's buoy, thanks to a luffing match between Chanticleer and Erica. Chanticleer declined to jib at the buoy and in getting round was passed by all the boats but Phœbe, but in the reach to Kowloon Rock and beat to Channel Rocks she again got into third place,

A quick run down with a stronger wind brought the boats to the finish.
