A Chinese dealer in Des Vœux Road was on Wednesday fined $25 for illegally storing seven- teen tins of kerosine. Inspector Duncan found the tins hidden under a bed in the shop.

Mr. Chas. T. Broxup, late of the Lancashire, Derbyshire, and East Coast Railway, left Hong- kong on Wednesday by the Yuensung to take up the position of locomotive superintendent on 1 the Manila railway.

A man named Eric Kirk was charged at the PoliceCourt on the 4th March with deserting from the 10th Lincolnshire Regiment at Singapore on the 5th April, 1894. The accused has been for more than a year employed as temporary light keeper at Gap Rock under the name of Hunt. The military authorities wrote stating that they did not want the man and he was therefore discharged.

At the Police Court on Monday, before Com- mander Hastings, a man was sent to gaol for six months with hard labour for stealing a clock, of the value of $100, from the officers' mess of the Hongkong Regiment. The thief was introduced to the premises by a friend and unnoticed he picked up the clock and went away with it. Fortunately he was observed by & Chinese sergeant, who arrested him.

OPIUM.

HONGKONG, 11th March.-Beng 1-The market. has ruled weak and rotes have declined. Current quotations are $710 for New Patna, $715 for Old Patna, $705 for New Benares, and $707) for Old Benares.

On Saturday afternoon the Hongkong Vol- unteer Corps took part in gun practice at North Point. There was a very good muster of men. They left neadquarters at 2.45 accompanied by the drum and fife baud, and firing commenced about 4 o'clock, the target being placed out at sea. The shooting of the 7-pounders and the Maxims gare complete satisfaction to Major Sir John Carrington, Commandant, Captain Gordon, B.A., Adjutant, and the other officers, and after a short rest the return journey was made, headquarters being reached at about 6.30.
