TONNAGE.
HONGKONG, 3rd November-During the past fortnight our freight market has improved consider- ably, owing to an increased demand for various voy- ages, and a scarcity of suitable ready tonnage. Some ten steamers trading constwise have been withdrawn homewards by owners, no doubt on account of the | low rate of exchange and unremunerative freights current during the past year. The rice crop at Sai- gon and Bangkok are reported to be fairly good, and shipments of Siam grain are now coming for- ward, while Saigon are expected early in December. From Saigon to Hongkong, there has been a good £25 Tls. IS, sales & b. demand for ready steamers at 16 cents, but rates
