SHANGHAI, 15th July -(From Mesara. Noël, Murray & Co's. Piece Goods Trade Report). Business, thought less in extent than last week from first hands, bas continued on much the same lines so far as English goods are concerned, but a considerable trade has been done in American makes both from stock and to arrive, and also between the natives themselves. It is all being done in anticipation of orders from Tientsin and Hankow, and no doubt to some extent to secure the Exchange which was threatening to drop some days before it actually did. There is no special news of interest from our dependencies; the want of rain appears to be the common com- plaint, on all sides. Clearances, sepecially of American goods, have been heavy this week. The Auctions have denoted a steady to flrm war- ket for Cottons, but Woollens have failed to hold their own for the most part.
METALS. (From Messrs. Alex. Bielfeld & Co's Report), 16th July:-The past week has been an exceptionally good one; there appears to have been almost a revival of the state of trade which per bale
existed early last year. There are many reasons .$82.00 to 104.00 for this condition and the only cause for surprise ....100.00 to 117.00 is that it has not come before. Perhaps the 115.00 to 120.00largest factor is the exchange, which now standa .120.00 to 127.00 at 28 81, weak, while the lowest touched before ..183.00 to 140.00
this has been 28. 83d., and the feeling seems to be that the bottom has been reached. This has also led to a great many of the contracte being inade in silver, as the dealers think that there is no 2.12 possibility of their having to pay any more, and that they might benefit by the rise. Another factor, which we have been constantly keeping in wind, is the fact that stooks are now getting lower, and it would have been impossible to have waited much longer before placing new orders.. These two causes have undoubtedly been the main factors, aided by the better reports from the up-river and northern markets.
