SHANGHAI, 1st July.-(From Messrs, Noël, Murray & Co's. Piece Goods Trade Report).- The market appears to be in a transition state, and it cannot be long now before it is decided At present whether it is to go up or down. prices are keeping firm for goods that have not been overdone, but on the other hand the excessive supply of some, notably American makes, is tending towards a state of depres- sion.

-..་

So long as clearances keep up, as they have been doing lately, there is little to complain about, for the dealers have undoubtedly got plenty on hand to last for some time to come. The best thing that could happen would be a continuation of this comparative inactivity, work off present stocks and be ready for whatever change there may be a few months hence. That there will be a considerable change seems more than probable, private advices from the United States leading to the expectation of a very excessive Cotton crop and a big drop in pricea for that staple. Futures had already been sold at seven gold cente and it was thought not improb- able the price might go down to six or even lower. The reports concerning the damage to the crop by floods were very much exaggerated, as was anticipated at the time, in fact they seem to have done more good than harm to the land. The natives must be taught meanwhile, however, not to expect to reap the whole benefits of cheaper Cotton, as there is still a wide margin between present prices here and what manufac- turers can afford to sell at. The current business, per piece 1.60 to 1.70 though small, shows firm prices privately, but 1.95 to 212) there is a slightly weaker tendency at Auction. 2.30 to 3 071 The Natives keep putting off the time when they

expect a revival of the demand to set in. At 2.40 present there is certainly not much encourage- 2.20 to

Nowchwang is said to be 7.00 better and orders for American Sheetings have 5.40 come forward, but it will probably not be necess 1.30 ary to call on Importers to fill them. Local Industry. Since our report of 10th inst. several additions bave been made to the number of spindles in the Foreign Mills, for instance, the Ewo Mill has 16,000, the International 28,000, and the Soychee Mill 20,000 at present running. The Prospectus has just been issued for the Yah- loong Cotton Spinning Co., Ld., with a capital of Tls. 750,000. It is for the purpose of taking over what is known as the Chang Kee Mill, ruoning 6,200 spindles, to which it is possible to add nother 5,400 with the present boiler and engine
