PINY THE POOR MANDARINS.

* Very few people, we imagine, have any idea of the notual salaries allowed by the Chinese Government to its high officials. A list lies compiled by an authoritative source, the salaries attached to the various loon in the rich viceroyalty of Kiang- and the smallness of the figures set forth cannot fail to strike anyone having the casual knowledge of the immense sums by Chinese omcials out of their posts. contrast' between the stated salaries dit the actual“ emoluments of the high idarima» is," of “course, ridiculous, when we

CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT. Chechow, Taiping, Liuchow, Fengyang, and Ingehow is only Tls. 2,000 a year each. The Vice-Prefects, of whom there are eight in Kiangsu, Kiangge, and Anhwei, are sup- posed to be still more miserably recompensed by a trustful (P) paternal Government, the salaries ranging from Tls. 2,000 per annum allowed to the Prefect of T'ai-tsang, to Tls. 800, which forms the princely salary that rewards the poor Prefect of Sechow,, Is it any wonder that the name of the mandarins in China has become synonym for all that is extortionate and dishonest ?
