SHANGHAI, 24th October.—(Fro:n Mr. Geo. W. Noël's report)—The past week has been an ex- tremely quiet one in this trade; in fact, in plain goods, business is almost af a standstill. The de- cline in Exchange was not of anfficient duration to have mucli̟, if any, effect on prices, and the partial recovery that has taken place is likely to do more harm than good. The enquiry is very limited at the moment, orders from all sides being withheld in a most unaccountable manner, as it cannot be said that exces ive quantities have gone forward, and the prices current up to now are by no means prohibitive. There is no attempt being made by importers to force sales, the cost of replacing being so much in excess of anything obtainable at present, they are quite content to nurse the market and there is no reason to doubt. that it will adapt itself to the situation before very long. The shipments northwards are being considerably curtailed, as the stock in Tientsin in heavy and moving off very slowly. Owing to to the continued occupation of Newchwang by the Japanese it is said that the native authorities there are unable to levy their customary taxes ou, imports and are, therefore, doing all they can to discourage the trade at present, in the hope, no doubt, that they may reap the benefit by and bye. The markets at the riverine ports are all very quiet, and Szechuen is taking scarcely any plain Cotions, but Fancy goods are going more freely. The private business reported gives but little idea of the position of the market, except its lifelessness; the auctions, however, show that there if a certain amount of demand at about. prices recently current, and which they still have the privilege of supplying without in- terruption from private sellers.

Metals.-(From Mr. Alex, Bielfeld's report)-- 28th October:-Business has continued steadily through the week without any marked change,
