TONNAGE.

SHANGHAI, 5th July. (From Messrs. Wheelock & Co.'s report.)-In our homeward freight market rates remain in a very unsettled state or America, both for shipments Overland and við · Suez, Trans-Pacific rate for tea at one cent was freely availed of by ship- pers, and large qu intities of tea have left here within the past few days at this figurs. For the next steamer 11 cent is quoted, at which price she will probably obtain what cargo she requires, but after her depar ture rates may possibly fall again in the face of out- side competition, unless some combination is arranged in the meantime. For London thee is no change. For London vid Suez.-Demand for tonnage in this direction fluctuates very considerably, and though occasionally a departing steamer secures good sup. port, others on the other hand are not so fortunate. For New York vid Cape.-Chartering in this air ction appears to have been almost overdone, and we shall be very surprised if sufficient ergo is forthcoming to Batisfy the anticipations of charterers. The Dru. meltan, at present loading, is in search of a large quantity of cargo, expecting if possible to sail from here to New York direct about the middle of August. The Sam Sholfield is also ready to load, and intends staying here suffici utly long to enable her to procure as much cargo as possible. The Adam W. Spies is also chartered and we hear that her lay days extend over an unprecedently long period. "The Belmont, with a somewhat unexpectedly large quantity of cargo, sailed on the 29ta ultimo for Hongkong to complete her, loading! In addition to the above ships the Celeste Burrill, due here any moment now, will also take the berth. Rate as quoted is 25a., but it is more than likely that cheaper rates can be obtai ed. Rates of freight are:-From Shanghai to London by Con- ference Lines, general cargo s.; waste silk 458.; 88 558. Northern Continental ports, general cargo 428. tid.; waste silk 458. ; tea 45s. New York. general cargo 508.; tea 458. New York við London, general cargo 50s.; tea 558. Bostou, general cargo 52s. 6d. Philadelphia, general cargo 60s. Above rates are subject to a deferred return, as per Coi ference eir- cular. London by Shell Line, general cargo 40s. less 10 per cent.; Hamburg, general cargo 35s, net.; New York, general cargo 418. net; Philadelphia, general cargo 51s. net. Havre direct. general cargo 37s. 6d. net; Genoa, tallow 358., general cargo s. net; Mar- seilles, tllow 35s., general cargo 37s. 6d. net. 45s. per ton of 20 cwt. for above three ports. For New York by sail 258. Coast rates are:--Chinking to Whampoa, 18 candareens regular lines, no demand for outsiders; Moji to Shanghai S .50 per ton coal; Nagasaki to Shanghai $1 30 per ton coal. No dis- engaged vessel in port.
