THE 1911 REVOLUTION This time we will study the 1911 Revolution in China. There are these. points to remember: 1.
The revolution broke out in October 10, 1911. But the Ching Dynasty did not fall until early 1912...
The revolution was not Well, plained. Revolutionaries prepared for it hurriedly, and most of then expected it to be another failure, Therefore the eventual success was a surprise. Because the revolution ended the age-old. monarchical system of government in China, historians any exaggerate the import- ance of the part played by revolutionary leaders like Sun Yat-sen.
·Sun Yat-sen did play a part in bringing about the révolution, but it was not aa important as people ̇thought.
We could say that:
revolutionuṛies overthrew the
·Chiang dynasty. that the weak dynasty collapsed. itself.
In fact, both of these were partly true. But b was more important than
CAUSES FOR THE 1911 REVOLUTION
1. Coming of the West and
growing imperialism
The Westerners came
China and opened her
up since 1840. From
1895 to 1900, China.
to
was nearly partitioned
by foreign;powers.
There were tie
following ways of
saving China:
a. At first, they
thought they could
reform, the Ching Dynasty und gehe China strong again, However, the Self-Strengthening Movement (1862- 1894) and the Hundred: Day Reform (1898) ended in. failure. This
showed that refora seemed useless. Then, some Chinese people tried to resist foreigners by armed force. An example. was the Boxer Uprising (1900-1902). This method was equally uselena.
More and more Chinese felt that to save China, the Ching Dynasty
must be overthrown. The need to modernize China(dase)-Limited. reform did not make Chiheatroag. Many. people felt that Ching Dust follow the Western powers in
establishing a government based on the people. Thus tire. Ch'ing Dynasty must be ended first. REASONS FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE 1911 REVOLUTION This is different from general causes of the revolution itself, when. ve speak of the causes of the revolution, we are expected to ahei'Y revolution tuere was a When we speak of the reasons (or causes) for the success, we aro expected to answer WHY the revolution succeeded in 1911 and not earlier. 1. Decline of the Ching. Bynasty-As we painted out last time, the Ching Dynasty liad been on the decline since the early 19th
century; whether
politically (weik
control over provinces), socially
(growing independent: power of social leaders called scholar-gentry), economically Chine government becoming poares: and poorer): and militarily (the government's ormed forces hecoming weaker and weaker). If there had not been the coming of Westernera which stimulated reform and revolution, perhaps a new dynasty might have replaced. the Ching Dynasty," Foreign imperialism Chinese people wanted to save their country. The Ching Dynasty seemed an obstacle. So people tried to overthrow it. Effects of the Late Chang Reform (1901- 1911) In the last. LU years.
dynasty the Ching government attempted some reforms such as: sending students to study abroad, for examples Japan. But these student's bacame dissatisfied with the corrupt rule of the Caling Dynasty (because of the influence of new ideas). Many
of these students, begane
revolutionaries aiming at overthrowing the Dynasty
practice of constitutional rule, which gove a chance to local provincial leaders (called scholar- gentry) to
establish independent power againes the, ̇centrol government.
militury modernization, and the creation of new armies, but this only led to the rise of
regional armí ek loyal to regional
leaders like Yuan.
Shih-kai and not to
the central·
government.
As you can see, the ch'ing Dynasty tried to reform itself, but the efforts only quickened its own downfall because the reforms led to forces that eventually tried to overthrow the dynasty instead of saving it.
4. The Chinese
Revolutionary movement - This was led by men like Sun Yat-sen and Huang. Haing(). They tried many times to overthrow the Ch'ing Dynasty.
EVENTS LEADING TO THE 1911 REVOLUTION·
uhán
1. New army in the
areas ~ The army was part of the Late Ching Reform, But many soldiers.and officers were influenced by revolutionary ideas and were not loyal to the Ching government. They set up revolutionary: organizations, one of which was pulled
Literary Society. The Literary Society: prepared a revolt in Wuhan, but on October 9, 1911, the government knew the jikan,
because the
revolutionaries accidentally
exploded a bomb while testing it. The revolutionaries teured that further delay would lead to their being captured by the government, so they started a revolt the next day, october 10. Declarations of independence hy thie provinces. The
following groups of people should have cone to the help of the Ching Dynasty- even if yuhau was in the funds of the revulutionaries: (a) officials (b) the army (c) scholar-gentry at local-provincal
levels. BUT they did
not. In fact, in the following 2 noạth's or so, they declared. their provinces, independent from the Ch'ing dynasty, this formally put an end to the Ching Dynasty. CONCLUSION: COLLAPSE OF THE CHING DYNASTY- Revolutionnries (like Sun Yat-sen) provided a elight push' (local small~
·scale revolts) igaingt the Ching Dynasty. Because the Ch'ing:
| Dynasty was wory weak
(weak control over the provinces) and because it did not have supporters, the 1911 Revolution was.
