In this and a few coming. issues, we'll discuss the.
tue origins or causes úf First World War (1914- 1918), Either you say the First World War or you: Bay World War I (without
the). The importance of the war is that for centuries before 1914 wara were often games played by kings, emperora, nobies and so on without involv ing the majority of the masses, the common people. In the First World War bowever, adult males were conscripted to serve as soldiers (ite. called upon by the government to fight for the fatherland). Massive killing of common people occurred. In the past, wars were fought by professional soldiers, and there were not many of m them. Now every adult male citizen van required by law to do the fighting. And millions instead of thousands of them vere Wounded or killed. It is. because of this that the First World War was called the first total var in history, It was total because all people were either directly or. indirectly involved. CAUSE OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR (1914-1918)
The causes of the First World War (1914–1918) were
of 2 kinda: underlying and immediate. 1. Immediate couges -
You will learn later that the great powera (Germany, Austria, Britain, France, and Rudaia) euch, took some steps in the summer of 1914. In the end these steps led up to the
sutbreak of a world worl So each of the great powers shared some RESPONSIBILITIES for eausing the war. By (!immediate causes" we
mean these
responsibilities",
2. Underlying causes
Historians think, that the great' povèrs took the steps in 1914 because they were influenced by Rome long-term historical forces well before the year, such as militarism, nationalism',` and colonialism. The se forces affected the great powers alike, though în different degrees. In trying to give more thorough or deeper explanations for the First World. War, wistorians look. at the conditions of. Europe before 1914, These forces and
conditions formed the
underlying causes',
as followed

European great, powers made a number of
alliances or ententes. (non-military agree- ments of friendliness) with each other. In the end they all became members, in one of the two opposing alliance camps; the Priple Alliance (Germany, Austrio & Italy) against the Triple Entente
(Britain, France & Russia). At first, so alliance was a way of self-defence. It was used to frighten off any country who might make war on others. Starting fron the late 1900s, however, Germany and Austria used their alliance to take.. offensive actions, i.e. to support é strong or aggressive foreign policy against other countries. We: shall learn about the alliances ond ententes, and then we shall learn how the Alliance Syntex led to the outbreak of the

In the Dual Alliance, Germany pizomised military help for Austria if Austria was attacked by Russia. 11 France attacked Germany, tuen Austria would remain neutral and prevent other powers (e.g.) Russia) from helping France
B. Triple Alliance 1882
In that year, Italy joined the Dual Alliance,
C. Reinsurance Tresty
1887 Although allied with, Austria, Germany maintained friendship with Russia by this treaty. The treaty waaz not a formal alliance. There were no specific terms committing thà two powers to help each: other militarily. Russia was willing to sign, the treaty because she did not know about the Dual Alliance, which was kept in secret. France-Russian
Alliance 1893-94 - Germany tried to prevent Russia and France from entering into an alliance, so that there would not be two eve¤ies on the two fronts of Germany (one on the east, the other ou the west). However, Keiser William II of Germany
forced Bismarch to resign in 1890, and then dropped the friendship with Russia. This gave France a good chance to try to form an alliance with Russia so as to act against Germany. In 1893-94, the two powers made an alliance. In the
alliance, bott France. and Russia promised military help for each other if attacked by. arother power. Entente Cordialle 1904.
411 European Powers bad allies excet for Britain, so Britain decided to abandon her Isolationist policy. At first, she approach -ed Germany but Williad II was not
enthusiastic for an alliance. Finally, in 1904, Britain and
France settled their
quarrels over colonial matters and cupeludéd an agreement called Entente Cordialle. It vas called on entente because Britain and France only promised. help vaguely but did. not promise wili tury cooperation.
Triple Entente 1907 France then tried to bring Russia and Britain into a closer understanding. The three power concluded the Triple Entente in 1907 1
G. Conclusion - Europe“. was divided into two compa: the Triple Entente against the Triple: Alliance. This situation made it very likely for a minor dispute between the great powers to develop into a general war. This wüs becausé. the great powers depended on support from its ally or allies. Then the great powers vould be encouraged to use war instead of peaceful diplomacy as a way of anlving interuntiunal disputes. They might take strong steps
against each other, and
they really did this in the summer of 1914.
