Dear Students,.

From today onwards, I shall give you a series of sample papers as aids to your final revision. This series of papers consists of questions that are constructed in a style concordant to that in the certificate papers in previous years. I hope you will make good use of these papers.

Today we start with a specimen of Paper II.

Although a woman is capable of producing as many as 20 children during her reproductive years under conditions of maximum fertility, practical experi- ence tells us that persistent pregnancy and child birth constitute a serious health problem both for the mother and for the children.

For the. mother; continuous pregnancy depletes matemal health by nutritional drain, because the body of the mother, has to provide the needed nutrients for the development of the unborn infant as well as the production of milk for the child after birth, Medical studies show that large family size and short birth intervals are associated with various adverse health effects, such as proneness to pregnancy complications, preinature births among infants, poorer. growth in height and weight, lower: IQ scores among the children, and sometimes, maternal and infant deaths.

In Hong Kong, although one often has an impression of happy, healthy children playing in the streets, malnutri-

tion and disease are still present though not easily distinguishable. A longitudinal study of the growth, development and rearing children in Hong Kong con- ducted by Field & Baber reports the fact that the prevalence of infection among infants is high, particularly respiratory and gastro-intestinal in- fections which usually start at about three months of age and are rather frequent in the first year of life. Overcrowding and poor ventilation associated with large family size and low socio-economic level are factors causing these infections, making young children vulnerable to illnesses like cough, cold, chest trouble and fevers, bronchitis, dianhoea and vomiting.

It was also observed that the babies under study usually grew well both in height and weight during the first few months of life; but at about 4 months of age, especially in cases where the baby was put on artificial milk alone while the mother went out to work, the baby started to contract infections. As a result the nutritional in-take became inadequate to meet the calorie and protein requirements; resulting in a prolonged period of slow gain in weight and height. In many cases, the child's attitude also changed, and it became more irritable and uninterested in its surroundings. This'. condition usually did not improve until the child reached about two years of age by which time food intake, had improved This problem of under- nourishment and poor development was obviously more serious in families where food had to be shared among too. many siblings.

and dirt, the crowds, the pollution and the general rush, of the city contrasing this with the clean air and the leisurely. way of life in the country. Bui David had always resisted. He always countered by saying that city life offered him a choice of theatres, concerts, cinemas, and good pubs and dis- cotheques not to mention a wide variety of shops. One of the factors which contributed to his having second thoughts was the public transport system which he used mainly for travelling to and from work. It was: too expensive to run a car in the city. Taxis were out of the question, and he had ruled out cycling as being too

dangerous and unhealthy. So he had to rely on public transport. Up to a few years ago, the public transport system was cheap and efficient. But David, to his horror has discovered that it is becoming more and more expensive and more inefficient...

He has found that waiting for a bus is a gamble. Sometimes the bus comes, sometimes it does not. If it does come; it is often full and he has to wait for the next one. In the meantime the queue has been growing and very often although he has been at the head- of the queue when, the bus comes, many people jump the queue leaving him at the hack. By the time he is about to enter the bus, he hears that horrible call from the conductor, "Sorry, full up. The Underground is not much better. It is invariably overcrowded and he does not like being jostled by the crowd.

Now, he is beginning to wonder if his friends might not have a point in singing the praises of country life. He is at present, chewing over the matter.
