Dear Students,

Today I would like to draw your attention to one of the most difficult types of questions in HKCEE English II; short comprehension.

Each year about S to & questions deal with short comprehension. To tackle them, the candidate must have adequate knowledge of vocabulary, usage and idioms. Unfortunately most candidates. are weak in these areas.

To prepare for this type of question, the candidate should practise intensive reading of short passages, paying parti- cular attention to the vocabulary, usage and. idioms used. He should underline the words that make up the idiom in the sentence and in case of doubt consult the dictionary:

Here I have set for you a number of apestions on short comprehension. Can you identify the idiom in each question? 1: Initially, the idea had been for a man.to ascend with the balloon, but the king ruled this to be tog dangerous.
