Tin mining and

rubber plantation have helped the development

of v. Malaysia in the following ways:

(1)Increase of Popula- tion and Establish- dent of Towns

The two activities ore profitable. especially tin wỹning, and have;

therefore,

encouraged immigra- tion to the country. Towns are set up, such as Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, of which the develop- ments are partly owned to the two activities.

(2)Increase of Employ-

ment Opportunities

The two activities are labour intensive, They absorb a lot of labour ice. provide

a lot of employment. opportunities for the people..

(3)Development of Other

Industries

"Since tin mining needs a lot of cheap electricity, it has encouraged the

It is unsafe for the country. to rely solely on these two products since the prices, especially in recent years, fluctuate and mostly fall consider- ably. It is mainly due to the fluctuation of the world'e demand of the two products as

affected by the keener competition from other

industries. For tin, there is the

Solution:

The problems can be solved by diversifica- tion.. Diversification of crops is preferr able on the large. rubber plantations, eg. the growth of food crops.

Diversifi- cation of industry should be encouraged hy the government. Other types of industries can be developed, based on her home production of iron and H.E.P.TO100 pronote the production of the two activities and reduce the cost of production, more efficient methods... ahould be adopted and new marketa should be opened.
