Today we'll concentrate on a new type of question set in last year's Certi- Licate Examination,

I'd call it "cross-matching". In fossence, you are provided. with two columns of words or phrases and you fare required to matclt up the phrases in The two columns so that they become, for:cxample, a complete, sensible sentence.

This type of question isa good test of your command of English. You have to be familiar with a number of com- imon patterns or expressions in order Jtp know which phrase should be paired.

| up with which. Some students may find: cross-matching difficult because, they" ! say, many phrases are very similar or actually (may:be to their mind only) interchangeable.

I don't think this is the case. "If a cross-matching question is set, the one who sets the question will certainly avoid any ambiguity that may arise. However he will surely add in some distractors which are often really dis- tracting or 'distressing. So, the key to

·tackling questions of this kind is to know how common words or ex- pressions are used with other words or phrases to give certain mcanings; and to know some unacceptable patterns in order to avoid then. Thus, if you know that dislike is used with the-ing foami, you will certainly not choose, for instance, to go swimming to pair up with She dislikes, and instead you'll pick up going swimming thus, She dislikes going swimming.

Sometimes, when the pairing is not very obvious, you may have to, resort to trial-and-error; or you may attempt the problem the other way round, ie. you: try to choose the right phrase by eliminating other obviously wrong ones.
