Describe the reactions of Britain, France and Soviet Russia to the policy in the same period

Hitler came to power: in 1933 The Second Wat World War broke out

1939. So you are asked to describe Hitler's foreign policy just between these six years you must first of all point out the motives of Hitler's foreign policy. It was with these motives in nind that Hitler took measures to fulfil them.

The first important motive was to free Germany from the restrictions of the. Versailles Treaty of 1919. The Germans had always regarded the treaty terma as a national humiliation, and Hitler vanted to destroy then. The second motive was to include all Gernans in. other East European countries inte Germany. The third motive was to expand German

influence into Eastern.. Europe, so as to form a⠀ large German

d empire that would last for a thousand years. Such vas Hitler's fareign policy in theory.

In discussing Hitler?s foreign policy in practice, just trace the measures: that he took. Pick these measures out by tracing. the years one after emother. The main thing. to remember, is" that

at first Hitler moved

cautiously in foreign policy so as to i the least amino arouse

suspician and attention among the greit powers, Towards the

latter years of the period: 1933-39,

however, Hitler became more and

Se moro, agiresšive. Germany withdrew from the disarmament cOR... ference and Left the League of Nations in 1934,

that restricted the size

of German armaments.

was under- taken.

In 1936, to show her refusal to obey any international agreements that the Allies dictated, Germany announced she was no longer bound by. the peace treaty of

Locarno (a peace treaty made in 1925 renouncing

var and aggression).

Hitler even ordered German troops to re- occupy the Rhineland, region that the Versail Treaty demilitarized. Meanwhile, he entered into an alliance called the Anti-conintern Pact with Fascist Italy.

In 1938, in fulfillment of his motive of uniting. all fellow Germans iuta Germany. Hilter tried to annex Austria, which van a German-speaking nation, TOPCAMLDruma Presidenti vaa summoned to Germany. and threatened to hand power over to the: German-controlled

Austrian Nazis. The completion of the annexation was known, as Anschluss in history.

Then Hitler picked his mext victim. Czechoslovakia. The Sudetenland ragion of

Czechoslovakia contained many Germans, and Hitler threatened Czechoslovakia to surrender the region to Germany. An international crisis resulted. Chamberlain

of Britain met Hilzer in Munich in late 1938 in search of a peaceful settlement of the crisis, but in the end Hitler got all he wanted. This passive attitude (i,e. cowardly submittion to fascist dictators and their written down in history

aggression) vað

as "appeasement”. The Western powers hoped that aggressors like Germany and Italy would be" satisfied with territorial gains and would stop further #ggressive expansion, The contrary happened; Hitler was encouraged in expansionist ambition and moved to annex. Poland, after swallowing Czechoslovakia esu whole in early 1939. The Western" powers were alarmed, Poland had not any German minority.

| Germany therefore had not

any excuse for the protection of her own people. Britain and France promised support for Poland in case of any German aggression. The Germans really, |invaded Poland in:

September 1939. The Western powers thereby declared war on Germany This led to the Second. World War.

It is important, in.

answering

this

question,

to clearly describe each of the main historical events of Nazi expan- sionism in the period. Some explanation of the background to the events and their effects on onei another should be includ- ed, for example, the re- asons for the adoption of appeasement by the Western powers towards Nazi Germany. (such as factors like the general fear si and consequent efforts în preventing another. World War, and the belief ̇that some of Hitler'a

demands in foreign籟—— policy were justified).

As for the reaction of Soviet Russia to the Nazi aggressions, just remember that before the Munich appeasement, Stalin (dictator in Russia) tried to come into an alliance with the Western powers agai Naši

ny: He özübred communists “al over the world to suspend the struggle against their capitalist govern- ments for the time being and to enter into an alliance with the middle- class so as to defend the fatherland of communi an (Soviet Russia) against facist empires like Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan. These policies however, aroused suspicion from the |Western powers, who were

slov in responding to the Russian proposal for in anti-Nazi front. Knowing that cooperation with countries like Britain and France against Nazi Germany was not practic- able, Stalin began turn- ing to Hitler adeal in 1938. The

vinced Stalin that the Western powers were en- eouraging German aggres- sion" in Eastern Europe a a way to act against Soviet Russia, Consequent ly, he eutered into a |pact, known as the Nazi-

Soviet Non-aggression pact, with Germany in 1939, The main effect of this pact was to free Hitler from having to reserve German troops against Soviet Russia and therefore to encourage Germany to invade Poland in Septem- ber 1939. The final result was the Second World WarN

question. Take it as the 'policies" of the powers

tovards Nazi aggressions. The Western powers reaction was appeasement. The Soviet reaction was cooperation with Hitler. Both failed to stop Germany from further aggression, and that's why war was 'on in 1939.
