Included on the right side of this sche- matic diagram are the factors which influence cach individual component, although it is obvlous that these factors are not mutually exclusive and some. depend on others directly or indirectly.

It can be seen from the above diagram that by varying the "factors" one can write essays of different quality. and style.

As: paragraphs are an integral part of a composition, they are very impor |tant. And I think it is appropriate to discuss paragraph writing in some detail | today, leaving other factors perhaps for

later discussions.

Simply put, a paragraph is a group Jof sentences for sometimes just orie sentence) related to one central theme and arranged in a logical and fluent order:

theme and serve only to develop.or elaborate 'it. Usually the first sen一 tence in a paragraph is the topic sentence: Sometimes, however, it is the last sentence and rarely It. occurs elsewhere in the paragraph.

Don't think that all topic sen- tences are obvious. Some are even absent; in such cases, we say that the topic sentence is “implied in the context.

Each paragraph, to serve its function of conveying an idea, should have a theme. The classical coricept of: Mone idea, one para. graph" is very helpful. If there are two or more ideas in one paragraph (2) Proper development (coherence). and they are not so intricately re- lated that separating them is il logical or unnatural, it is better to split the paragraph into two or more, with each devoted to only one idea. Conversely, it is not advisable to split one idea into two or more paragraphs if only one paragraph can adequately: express

In short, a proper development is a logical development.

It takes oi a special form. in descriptive or narrative paragraphs.. Here coherence is achieved in the spatial and temporal sense.

Usually coherence can be ob tained by using certain connectives, some examples being as a result.of. however, in addition (to), never. theless, nonetheless, on the con-

(3) Variety (variation of sentence pat:

terns)

In order to catch the reader's attention and make them feel. interested, a proper variation of sentence patterns is needed. It is hatural: that. dull repetitions will only get a dull response.

This, ultimately, has something. to do with a careful-choice of words which suit the occasion. Essays will be much livelierif sen- tence patterns and words are fully itilised to serve their functions...

(4) Proper emphasis.

It is logical and natural that important sentences are given more prominent positions in a composi- tion. The importance of a sentence, in this context, depends on its re- lation to the theme of the para-

graph.

3. This point can be generalised to the level of the whole essay. Therefore, paragraphs which are most important to the expression: of the central theme of the essay are given salient positions in the whole essay.

Moreover, proper: empliasisi疽 not measured only in terms of position; length is also acriterion. Thus, more uiportant ideas (in relation to the central theme) are discussed in more detail.

But then how is an essay constructe ed from paragraphs and what are the features of a good composition? Well, Fit is relatively easy. The above points "apply as much to a good paragraph 'as. to a good essay because a paragraph is, in a sense, a miniature essay.
