preferably near the world's. trade routes, provision of flat land, provision of raw materials and power, all these are the basic requirements of: industrialization. Japan does no possess any of them, There are so many disadvantages for the Industrial development in the country.

1}For its location, it lies on the castern edge of the continent of Asia and is quite remoted from the world trade routes.

2) For its relief, the country is mountainous and it experiences frequent earth-quakes, there is no enough flat land-for industrial site, or for farming: and pastoral industry which are principal sources of raw materials for industry.

3) For other raw materials, they are not self-sufficient, two, Japan prodices less than 10% of her total home requirement, that means, she has to spend a lot of money on the importation. from other countries. For instance, her home productions of iron, copper, zinc, gold, cotton, wool, all cannot meet. hen demand and have to be: imported, such as iron fron: Malaysia, Australia, U.S.A. cotton and from U.S. A. and wool from Australia, She has to import a lot of power too. Herhome production of coal is insufficient and of poor quality. For petroleum she can only supply 5% of her total requirement.

' In spite of the above disadvantages, Japan has emerged as a leading industrial power in Asia, Many of the above difficulties have been overcome. chiefly by the: advanced technology. The country possesses a well-trained labour force. Dating back to the reformation in the 19th century, the country. paid special attention to the education of people. Moreover, Japan also benefited from the wars. during the 1950!s and 60's. Due to the wars in Korea and Vietnam, the U.S.

established firms in Japan to. supply manufactured goods to these countries, Japan was therefore benefited from the importation of technology. Modern skills and techniques care employed in many

production activities, eg. Japan has the most advanced techniques in the world in investigating and extracting the deepsea oil-fields, such application of advanced "technology has helpad to

overcome her difficulties and produce more efficiently, making it more competitive in

the world market.

Of course, technology is not. the only factor which stimulates and supports the industrial development in Japan. The re. are other favourable factors too. They include:

5) Market:

Japari's: Asian neighbours offer a ready market for iron and steel and heavy machineries.. Her automobiles are competitive in the world market because: they consume less gasoline and are sold at lower prices. Her indented coast offers smple sites for extensive shipyards for the assembly of large tankers which are widely consumed in the world.

6) Transportation:

ts'coastal position ensures cheap and easy movement of raw materials and finished products. This can also compensate for its deficiency of local supply of raw materials.

7) Technology Advancement.

Since 1950's, Japan has adopted an automatic processing system from the cutting of steel to the assembly of welded blocks. This has encouraged a lot in the development of her heavy industry.
