(a) 5 Years Plan - Having successfully defeated Trotsky and become the dictator of the Soutet government, Stalin. began turning his attention to the problem of internal socialist: development, He ended Lenin's New Economic Policy and began the first Five Year Plan in 1928. The Plan was designed to develop Russian agriculture and industry and was intended to last. for 5 years (1928-33),With: major industries already in the government's hands, Stalin now told the factory organizers what Cand how much he expected them

In 1936 a general expulsion of members from the Party was ordered, In 1937, even the Red Army Commander-in-chief was shot. as spy and traitor. Despite the "public trials, the vast majority

purged were tried secretly. Torture was employed. In the end, the Great Purge served:its purpose. With Party and police officials competing to denounce one another, Stalin's power and leadership remained supreme. The fear of sudden arrest and imprisonment without trial. cowed the nation under an autocratic dictatorship. Opponents of Stalin were eliminated. Stalin had shown that he' was above the Party thus violating the basic Communist rule that the Party was everything. The secret: police was now seen to bé a more important instrument of rule. On the military level. however, the Red Army had been purged of its best commanders. and were demoralized. The result was defeat by the Germans in 1941, when Hitler ordered the attack of Russia.
