The ways how the Sarajevo assassination led to the outbreak of World War I.

The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the Hapsburg dynastyy took place on 28th June, 1914, When he and his wife were travelling in a car Cat Sarajevo, the capital of

Bosnia, they were shot by a man who Austria believed was. sent by a secret society with the secret approval of the neighbouring Serbian Government. We do not know whether this is true ar not, Austro-Serbian relations had not been good since 1903, In. that year, Serbia had a nev King, who was a young, y patriotic and able soldier, He was ambitious and wanted to lead Pan-Slavism, a movement, that aimed at detaching A territories inhabited by fellow. Slave:like Boania from. Austrian domination to form a unified South-Slay State. Fearful of being dismembered by rising nationalism and driven from influence out of the Balkans, Austria was naturally anti-Serbian. Relations

by Austria's"Pig War" against

Serbia in 1906 (when Austria imposed tariffs agalnst. Serbia's exports, especially pigs). Henceforth, the Hapaburg Monarchy was anxious to save Itself and revive declining: prestige by pursuing more ambitious policies in the Balkans, like encouraging Bulgaria to check Serbia. The Austrians were prepared. to teach the Serbs a lesson. This was encouraged by the German Kaiser's promise of support to Austria on Sth July. Although the Kaiser expected a local settlement of the crisis. he thought he ought to honour the Alliance with Austria and ought to show to Europe the diplomatic strength of Germany. Meanwhile Serbia denied all: responsibility in the plot. But Austria, was determined to fight Serbia. Finally, an ultimatum was presented to the Serbian Government, in which harshi demands to be answered in 48 -hours were made. Upon Serbia's

refusal to accept all the

demands, which might be due to her counting on Russia for support, Austria immediately. mobilized her armed forces.

The other Powers tried to: work for peace. Britain suggested a conference, which France, Italy and Hussia supported, and asked Germany to persuade Austria to make peace with Serbia. Out of consideration for a diplomatic victory, Germany, however, secretly encouraged Austria to put more pressure on Serbia instead. On 28th July, Austria declared war and mobilized her forces against Russia as well.. This was meant to tell the Russians to keep out of the local "dispute.

By now, European statesmen 'realized that the local assassination incident had brought an international crisis. Because of ignorance, fear, lack of confidence, and indecision, countries like Austria. Germany and Russia) ). did not know how to get over the crisis without a loss of face. Diplomats and kings therefore listened to the militarists; whose knowledge of the situation was even worse. People believed that while state business in times of peace belonged to the diplomat and ruler, state security in times.

As the neutrallty of Belgium had been violated by the German invasion, Britain declared war. on Germany on 4th August. In sum, in slightly more than one.. month's time, an Austro-Serbian local dispute led to a series of events, in which the Powers were one after
