In the highland area, the settlements are few and widely separated. Houses are grouped together near the source of river. They are found on gentle slope in a clearing in the forest. Some Mare abondoned. The people Sthere probably practise

crops such as rice, casava, yams and imaize in the Pclearing. Because of the heavy requatorial rainfall which Ma leaches the soil, the yield is low and can hardly provide any. csurplus. It is mainly a type of

subsistence farming,

Form of settlement and land use in lowland areas

Denser settlements are located in the lowland areas in a linear pattern, They are built along the river or canal on the embankments or levees above the flood levels, On the flood plain below 50m. artificial drainages are necessary. The river and canal provide communication for the area and supply water Hordrrigation and domestic usage. Since the soil is

fertile alluvium and irrigation. water is easily obtained, rice

is grown. Trees, which

produce fruits and provide

shades for the settlements,

are planted along the river too. They also help to reinforce the levees.

38. Mr. Liu, a sugar-cane

farmer at Chiai, said in a recent interview:"In the past, I planted sugar-cane in all my fields, but now I plant it on only 2/5 of the land. Igrow other crops on the rest of the land. (a) With the help of the:

(a) Favourable conditions

which used to encourage sugar-cane growing in SW Taiwan.

World: Average Price for Raul Super (1961-1971)

The lowland located on the western plain of Taiwan is suitable for farming. It is. situated around the tropic of Cancer, experiencing: sub-tropical to tropical climate which is suitable for the growing of cane. The hot and humid summer helps to "accelerate the growth of

sugar-cane, The dry sunny period in summer and early winter is good for the ripening and harvesting of sugar-cane since this climatic condition

is suitable for the

concentration of the sugar

content within the sugar-cane.

The rich alluvial soil in the

western coastal plain is suitable for the growth of sugar-cane and fertilizers are easily available. The attention to soil improvements has led Onot only to a reduction in the length of the growing season but also to a higher sugar yield Furthermore, cheap labour is available form the dense settlements nearby. Cane sugar used to be the major industrial crop and it is. an important export item of Taiwan. The profit of growing sugar increases with the rising of world demand. Also sugar-cane cultivation is: under. the control of the Taiwan government which encourages the growing of sugar-cane by setting the guarantee floor floor-price, giving free aids, fertilizer and bonus to the sugar-cane farmers.. (b) Reasons account for the diversification on crops

Since these areas are also suitable for the growing of food and other cash crops such as paddy, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, fruits, asparagers, etc., there is a strong competition of land use between sugar-cane and food crops. Also in recent years, the rapid increase of population results in greater demand of: food

so-there is a rise. crops,

in the prices of food crops. The profits of growing food. are thus more stable.

On the other hand, the price of sugar fluctuates every year according to the fluctuations of world demand, and so profit is unstable. As a matter of fact, food crops have shorter growing periods, e.g. the required growing period for paddy is 4 to 5 months but the growing period of

sugar-cane is about 10 to 15

months,These are the reasons why Mr. Liu and some other.

farms have diversified their

crops.
