Dear Students,

Today we come to consider letters to make. and deal with complaints, and letters to apply for jobs. These types of letters are most often. encountered in everyday life. And it would be ridiculous for a school-leaver who has learned: English composition for some ten years to be `ignorant of how letters of application should

be written.

LETTERS OF APPLICATION

Although a well-written letter of applica- tion may well enhance the success of job. hunting, your basic qualifications as needed by: your prospective. employer are what matters most. So the first thing you have to consider is not how your letter of application is to be phrased, but whether you suit the require- ̇ments.

Points to ponder

(1) Make sure you tell the truth, Even the most attractive and flowery letter caniot disguise your weaknesses or unsuitability. -(2). Remember to include the following:

your full name;

(ii) your sexy

(iii) your age (date and place of birth); (iv) your marital status;

·(v)·

your nationality;

(vi) your education and qualifications; (vii) your working experience; (vii) when you can start work;

(ix) the salary expected, and your present salary if you are working presently;

(x) the name and address of your. te-

feree(s);.

(xi) the testimonials you can supply; and (xit) why you apply for the job.

Please don't miss any of these, or think. that your prospective employer will find out later: he or she inay think that you are hiding something if you do,

See that your letter is well typed unless you are asked to apply in your own hand. writing,the first impression is important. (4) Your letter should be brief, clear and con-

cise.

(5) Write in a sincere and friendly tone, but

Applications for employment can be made in two ways:

The letter form............

This type of application is written. entirely in the form of a letter All the necessary information is included in the body of the letter, most appropriately.

·well paragraphed. It suffers, however, from the disadvantage that its size and format limit it to present only the essential points: and leave out other details if undue com- plexity is to be avoided.

The detailed form

The detailed form of application. allows for a far.greater degree of detail than the letter form of application. As in the letter form, it corisists of a brief cover ng letter addressed to the advertiser saying. where the applicant saw the advertisement, why he is applying for it, and when he will be able to attend for interview. He should then go on to state clearly in a separate sheet of paper all details concerning him- self that he regards as relevant. The per- sonal details sheet, frequently called a résumé or curriculum vitae, should start with the applicant's address, his sex, his date and place of birth, his nationality and his marital status. He then goes on to give a detailed resurne of his education, qualifi- cations and working experience. Together with the covering letter, this statement of :particulars comprises a formal application: for the post under consideration.

LETTERS OF COMPLAINTE

These letters should be written with exc treme care. The wording is important; even if you are infuriated at the matter, don't give way to abuse of language, for example, by making unjustified and harsh accusations,

When you plan a letter of complaint, make: sure you include the following, preferably in order:

(1) Introduction: regret the need to complain and say 'briefly what your complaint(s) is/are about.

(2) State concisely and accurately the details of your complaint(s). If you have more

·than one complaint, open a new paragraph for each. Remember to include if you are complaining about the quality of the goods. bought, the date and place of purchase, the exact identifying features of the goods and the quantity bought.

Refer briefly to the inconvenience caused. Ask for the remedy your recipient intends. but don't demand it. You may to give;

suggest one if you wish to. Besides, pay attention to the following rules when you are going to make a complaint;

(1) By all means, be polite. If you are being.

rude, your letter may create bad feeling and your recipient may be reluctant to help.

(2) Don't suggest how the mistake or damage may have occurred - it is a matter for the supplier to investigate.

Soon after 1 bought the set, I npticed that it was making high-pitched screeching noise whenever a cassette tape was played. T had tried many different cassette. tapes, including: newly-bought ones; but the noise was still there.
