ENGLISH [9]:

Stephen Lau (Foundation Press)»

Dear Students,

Last time we discussed the different ways.

Mary offered

"Let's move on to the next question," said.

(Rewrite and begin with the given words.)

I suggested that

I've never seen such a lovely girl as Kit. (Rewrite, using "loveliest".

10: We were so impatient that we could not

wait any longer. (Rewrite, using "too"

of rewriting sentences. I would like to make it. crystal clear that you should adopt an in-" tegrated approach to learning last week's somewhat tedious exposition indeed every- thing that prepares you for the HKCEE. I know that many students have the wrong notion that the kind of English (1.6. patterns and usages) they learn for one paper is different from that for another; in other words, they compart- mentalise their study of English. Suffice it to say that it is a foolish undertaking. What you learn in the error analysis for essays applies equally well to your problems in doing mul- tiple-choice questions (MCOs). Actually I've shown you on the first day how a simple instruction or rule can help you tackle various types of questions in different papers.

All you need to do is to give a little thought to the things you've learned for, say, Paper II, and to be aware of these when you are doing, say, Paper III So next time when you are writing an essay, be on your alert not to make the very same mistake that you made

in your sentence transformation exercises just a couple of days ago.

Before we turn to today's exercise, let's consider some main precautions in doing sentence transformation:

(a) During the rewriting process, keep the meaning of the original sentences as far as possible. Guard against any major changes în connotations.

(b) Follow the instructions given in brackets

Remember to follow them in full-

(c) Make only those changes which are neces

sary. Unnecessary changes may alter the:: meaning of the original sentences and hence will be penalised...

(d) However, additional changes which are.

justified and which are required for gram- matical or idiomatic reasons should be made.

(e) Remember to read through your sentences to see that they are accurate and fluent.

EXERCISE

Rewrite these sentences keeping the meaning of the original sentences as far as possible. Follow the instructions given in brackets. Make only those changes which are necessary. Example: "If you'd rather be on your own, I'll

leave you, Philip said. (Use "yourself")

"If you'd rather be by yourself, I'll leave you," Philip said.

He'll be given an injection by the doctor. (Rewrite, using an active construction.)
