f could defeat France first and then turn east to fight Russia, thinking that Russia was backward and could

mobilize only slowly. However, now that Russia had:mobilized her forces. Germany believed she must act quickly before Russia could further prepare for war, Germany believed that France would support Russia. Therefore, Germany ordered an attack on both France and Russia:
