(5) Balance of the Trade

The export of tin and rubber products forms the largest source of income of the country. They can balance the trade. The income can he used to buy things that the country lacks, such as food, As she still has to import a lot of foud from other countries., Money is also needed to buy raw materials, oil and machinery for the development of industry.

(6) Improvement of Infra-

structure and Social Welfare

The money are also used to develop the country in many other different ways, such ag construction of schools, hospitals, promotion of social walfare, improvement of irrigation scheme, etc.

Suggested Answers:

. Good Effect of Tin Mining and Rubber Plantation' on W. Malaysia

Tin mining and rubber plantation have helped the development of W. Malaysia in the folloving ways; (1) Increase of Population and Establishment of Towna

The two activitiøj are profitable, especially tin bining, and have, therefore, Encouraged immigration to the country. Towns are act up, such as Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, of which the developments are partly owed to the two activities,

(2) Increase of Employment

Opportunities

The two activities are labour intensive. They absorb # lot of labour i.e. provide

a lot of employment opportu-

nities for the people. : (3) Development of Other

Industries

Since tin mining needs

a lot of cheap electricity,

it has saepuraged the establishment of 14E, P.

b. Difficulties

It is unsafe for the country to rely solely on these two products since the pricen, especially in recent years, fluctuate and mostly fall considerably. It is mainly due to the fluctuation of

the world's demand of the two products as affected by the keener competition from other industries. For tin, there is the competition from other metals and plastics. For rubber, there is competition from synthetic rubber. Further- quality of the two more, products deteriorate. Many of the old mines are exhausted and many of the large rubber plantation split into smaller holdings, with poorer manage- ment and lens efficient work.

Solution

The problems can be solved by diversification. Diversification of crops in preferrable on the large' rubber plantations, e.g. the growth of food crops. Diversį. fication of industry should be encouraged by the government, other types of industries can he developed, based on her home production of iron und 1.E.P. To promote the production of the two activitica ¡and reduce the cost of

production, more efficient methods should be adopted and new markets khould be opened;

environmental problems arising from it.

SEA

Suggested answers Factors Determining the Location

The location of the industrial areas in this region is mainly determinea by the followig favourable factors:

1. Availability of Flat Land

The industrial areas are found on the quantul region where a larger piece of flat land in available. This piece lund is apart from the C.B.D., so land rent is cheaper, 2. Easy Transportation

„The industrial areas are

coust and are found along the served by a good harbour which is sheltered By highlunda on all sides andis vell facilitat ted with piers', Such a coastal location has strong pull for industries since transport cost of bulky raw materials by sea is cheaper. The region sta alsı linked with the a‡rpurt by railway.

3. Accessibility to C.h.D.
