Forms of settlemen' Sandiuse in highland areas

In the highland area, the settlements are few and widely separated. Houses are grouped together near the source of river. They are found on gentle slope in a clearing in the forest. Some are abandoned. The people there probably practise shifting agriculture. After burning down the trees, they grov fruit trees and food crops such an rice, casava, yama and maize in the clearing. Because of the heavy equatorial rainfall which leaches the soil, the -yield in low and can hardly „provide any surplus. It is Chainly a type of subsistence ffarming.

Since the soil is fertile alluvium and irrigation water is easily obtained, rice is grown, Trees, which produce fruits and provide shades for the settlements, are planted along the river too. They also help to reinforce the levees,

Suggested Answers; (a) Favourable conditions

which used to encourage sugarmosne growing in SW Taiwan.

The lowland located on

the western plain of Taiwan is suitable for farning. It in situated around the

tropic of Cancer,

experiencing sub-tropical

to tropical climate which is suitable for the growing of cane. The hot and humid summer helps to accelerate the growth of sugar-cane, The dry sunny period in summer and early winter is good for the ripening and harvesting of sugar-cane since this climatic condition is suitable for the concentration of the sugar content within thé sugar-cane. The rich alluvial soil in the western coastal plain is suitable for the growth of sugar-cane and fertilizers are easily available. The attention to soil improvements has led not only to a reduction in- the length of the growing season but also to a higher eugar yield. Furthermore, cheap labour is available form the dense settelmenta nearby. Cane sugar (used to be the major industrial crop and it is an APOT

profit of growing sugar inorçages with the rising of world demand. Also sugar- cane cultivation is under the control of the Taiwan government which encourages the growing of sugar-cane byz setting the guarantee floor priče, giving free aids, fertilizer änd bonus to the

Reasons account for the diversification on crops

Since these areas are also suitable for the growing of food and other cash crops such as paddy, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, fruits, asparagers, etc., there is a strong competi- tion of land use between sugar-cans and food crops. Also in recent years, the rapid increase of popula- tion results in greater demand of food crope, so there is a rise in the prices of food crops. The profite of growing food are thus more';stable

"On the other hand-the price of sugar, fluctuates every year according to the fluctuations of worl demand, and so profit is. unstable. A Batter of fact, food crops have shorter growing periods, e.g. the required growing period for peilly 4 to 5 monthì but the growing period of sugar-cane is about 10 to 15 months. These are the reasons why Mr. Liu and some other farms have diversified their crops.
