ENGLISH {16}
T.C. Rebeiro (Foundation Press)
Dear Students,
Last week I was approached by one of my students who entreated me to explain in greater. ̇detail the content and meaning of comprehen- sion passages during the English lessons: This incident reflects how deep the old-fashioned, passive habit of learning, comprehension has rooted in the student. The truth is that com- prehension cannot be learned by having the teacher to explain given passages word. for. word. It is a sheer: squandering of time whicki. can otherwise be used in another way to benefit the students Worse still, some students expect their teacher to explain comprehension passages in Chinese.
In fact the most effect ways to improve one's comprehension are: (a) to practise, in tensive and inquisitive reading frequently with the aid of a dictionary, alongside casual reading..
·at: one's leisure; (b) to do comprehension- exercises regularly, seriously and carefully on one's own.
Today I am publishing an exercise on short comprehension which is a type of question frequently asked in HKCEE English Language Paper II. I will give you the answers next week.
