「CAUSES OF THE FIRST
WORLD WAR, 1914-18-
(A) Underlying causes: They were causes that worsened the relations between the European great powers for
many years. before 1914, They made a general war between the great powers likely but not unavoidably.. 1. The Alliance System
This referred to the formation of rival alliances between two. groups of unfriendly and opposing powers. Bismarck first started the alliance system by forming the Dreikaiserbund (League. of the Three Emperors) between Germany, Austria and Russia in 1872-73. By 1907, all The great powers were members in either of the two rival allance camps; the Triple
Alliance (Germany, Austria and Italy) and the Triple Entente(Britain, France and Russia), The Alliance System contributed to the First World War in the following ways:: (a) Aggressive: foreign
policy - Instead of being restrained by members of an alliance, many powers, especially Austria and Germany,
policy after allying.
with each other. Far example, Germany. promised Austria support:when Austria. tried to annex Bosnia
and Heizegovina in
the Balkans in 1908.
(b) Inflexible
confrontation between. some of
the
powers Owing to the alliance system any quarrel between two powers of of different alliance. camps would involve the: others. For example, a dispute between Russia and Asutria would bring about a dispute between France and Germany. Each succeeding “ international crisis before 1914 fightened. the bonds within each of the alliance camps. The members of the two camps confronted each other inflexibly.
(c) More willingness to
risk war - Members of the alliances were emboldened in risking war, since there were friends, to depend on: for support, : For example, in the summer of 1914, when Austria and Serbia ran into conflict, Russia mobilized her troops against both Austria and Germany partly because of the understanding that France and Britain were on Russia's own
side.
(d) Tension, suspicion
and distrust - A11
this was partly
created by the
alliance system. The powers might over-react to one. another's diplomatic: actions. Claiming: that national interests have been violated, they might take
extreme "measures
such as war.
(c) Armament buildup The purpose of an alliance was national defence. After forming an alliance, the powers speeded up their program of: armament buildup for national defence, since any alliance. would be "toothless" if without military support.

This has
the following meanings: (a) enthusiasm for warr
among governments. For 40 years (1870- 1914), there were no: major wars between. the great powers. The harmful effects. de war were not easily seen. The great.
powers were more willing to go to war.
(b) preparations for war.
such as armament. build-up- After 1900, the great powers. increased expediture. on military needs. They were eager to maintain large armed forces to prepare for national defence in case of war. The naval race between Germany and Britain was one. example.
(c) spread of military
spirits and value:
among European. people ~ An. indication was the rise in popular literature of war- like ideas and pro- war stories: Darwin's theory of the survival.of.the. fittest gave support: to these ideas and stories.
(d) readiness to go to war as a policy among European powers - This is especially so for Gremany and Austria. They felt. that they were encircled by other powers. Whenever there were . international
problems, they were prepared to threaten war so as to achieve: a deplomatic victory

They contributed to the First World War in the following manner: (a) Colonial conflicts

establishing interests in the Turkish Empire and North Africa, for. example, resulted in fightening the bonds: of the Triple Entente.
