ENGLISH [10]

T. C. Rebeiro (Foundation Press)

Dear Students.

Today's column is designed to prepare you for comprehension questions in the HKCEE.

Comprehension as a question in the exam- ination is a rest of your ability to understand a given passage. The importance of such type of question cannot be overemphasized as it is asked in almost all language examinations ranging from the Certificate to the Matricula- tion level. And you all know you have to deal with comprehension questions in the HKCEE English Papers Il'and III.

I would like to recommend to you the following methods to improve your ability to read and comprehend English passages.

a) Practise intensive reading regularly. By intensive reading I mean you should read carefully every sentence in a passage with a view to understanding each word or idiomatic expression in each sentence and ultimately ali the salient points given. This is different from casual reading, which is mainly for pleasure or interest. It calls for full concentration, more time and patience. In return, the reward is great as by constant practice, you will surely improve your reading and understanding, and your standard of English as a whole.

I would advise you to choose only one English course book or reader specifically for the purpose of intensive reading. Consult the dictionary whenever you come across any difficult word or expression.

b) Form the habit of casual reading. This will help fix the knowledge of English you have already learnt from intensive reading or school lessons. Read more English newspapers, or novels you may borrow from your school library or the public library.

Unfortunately the noble habit of reading on one's own initiative has almost become non-existent for many Chinese students learn- ing English. It seems gone are the days when students flocked to the library and scrambled for paper-backs. This partly accounts for the falling standard of English among candidates in the HKCEE in recent years.

I hope what I have said today could inspire you to form the habit of reading for compre- hension and pleasure.

Here I have chosen two comprehension passages from my book for your practice.

Read, this passage and then answer questions 1 - 40

People who are involved in television pro. duction tend to think of themselves as artists,

a such are entitled' ta' certain privileges and like changing their minds øver so often in creative ideas. But over-riding this is the im portance of understanding what television work Is all about. Television is team work. No one can do it alone. Every member must contribute to the best of his ability and yet be able to fit in, Under such circumstances discipline is vital. This is to be imposed appropriately by leaders and acknowledged by their team-members.

A lot of people can become TV critics, but very few of them can become TV professionals within the Industry, This shows that a man of ideas can very seldom execute his own ideas. So if you are really interested to production work first learn to execute, acquire the techniques. When you are sure of your tools, then the ideas

will come.

Hong Kong has no institution to train people for television production. In the past, people have been taken on and trained on the job, which I think is still the best method yet. So far I have not coine across one person who could be productive without going through the apprenticeship. It is also discovered that people with previous working experience inevitably learn faster than the ones who have just finished their education. This can be very easily ex- plained. There is a considerable difference between the academic way of life and the professional one, therefore people moving from one to the other fave to undergo a period of adjustment.

University and college graduates are also put through this period of apprenticeship, but because their academic background is supposed to equip them for a more mature and profound way of thinking, they have a better chance to get ahead. But a diploms certainly, is not a licence to skip the initial training. And do not expect a lot of theorizing during this training period. It's going to be all practical. If you could come to terms with sweeping the floor and fetching lea for guests as required by the production you are on, then you are ready for

US.

But I did not want to shoot the elephant. I watched him beating his bunch of grass against his knees, with that pre-occupied grandmotherly air that elephants have. It seemed to me that it would be murder to shoot him. At that age I was not squeamish about killing animais, but I had never shot an elephant and never wanted to.

It was perfectly clear to me what I ought to do. I ought to walk up to within, say, twenty-five yards of the elephant and test his behaviour. If he charged I could shoot; if he took no notice of me it would be safe to leave him until the elephant driver came back. But I was a poor shot with a rifle and the ground was soft mad into which one would sink at every step. If the elephant charged and I missed him. I should have about as much chance as a toad under a steam-roller. But even then i was not thinking particularly of my own skin, only of the watchful yellow faces behind. For at that moment, with the crowd watching me, I was not afraid in the ordinary sense, as i would have been if I had been alone. A white man must not be frightened in front of 'natives'; and so, in general, he is not frightened. The sole thought in my mind was that if anything went wrong those two thousand Burmans would see me pursued, caught, trampled on and reduced to a grinning corpse. And if that happened it was quite probable that some of them would laugh. That would never do, I lay down on the road to get a better aim.

The crowd grew very still, and a deep, low, happy sigh, as of people who see the theatre curtain go up at last, breathed from innumer. able throats.

When I pulled the trigger I did not hear the bung or feel the kick, but I heard the devilish. roar that went up from the crowdy in that instant, in too shoɖ a time? oŭs wótsidyhave thought, even for the bullet to get there, a mysterious, terrible change had come over the olephant.
