Dear Students,

is Today I would like to deal with Dialogue Responses and Question Tags, two popular items in HKCEE Paper II.

The following are the suggestions I have given to my students to prepare them for such types of questions in the Examination. I hope. you will find them practical and useful.

(1). Tune in RTHK (Radio 3) and listen to the following programmes whenever you have time in the mornings.

Monday to Friday 6.58 a.m.

Today (Local news and interviews) 8.00-9.15 am.

Open Line (Telephone discussion on the air)

Saturday

7.45 a.m.

What's On (Introduction to Hong Kong's cultural activities)

8.10a.m.

Open Line

9.00 am.

BBC World News

9.15-10.a.m.

Open Line (Cont'd)

You will find many things to learn from these programmes: pronunciation, dialogue res- ponses, question tags, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions used by native speakers of English. Jot down any word or expression new to you and practise using them in your spoken and written English.

This method can also help you to improve your oral English,

(2) Pick one English reader used in Form 4 or Form 5. Underline those dialogue ques- tions and responses new to you, learn their meanings and make a bid to use them in English conversations with your classmates or friends.

By the way, have you tried talking with your friends in English on the telephone? It's. great fun and useful practice in oral English provided that it does not last so long as to inconvenience other members of your family, wishing to use the telephone.

{

Here is an exercise on dialogue responses and question tags. Try them and check with the answers given in the next issue.
