T.C. Rebeiro (Foundation Press)

Dears Student,

Today I would like to give you tivo model compositions. I have written. They are of such a kind that a well-trained candidate of the HKCEE might be expected to write. I hope those who are a little hesitant as to what their final work should look like will find a practical guide.

The following hints should help you to improve your composition writing:

1. Read the list of topics closely and decide

which one to attempt.

2. Understand the topic fully Underline the key words in the topic and make sure your answer is relevant.

Spend three to four minutes writing an orderly plan of your composition. A good plan will help you to write a relevant. and well-organized composition. This is possibly the most unportant part of your work, so do it well.

Plan your time so that you leave yourself five minutes at the end to read through your composition and correct any careless errors you may have made.

Do not write your composition, too short or too long. If the question stipulates 300 words, try to write the app ioximate number. There is no need to count the exact number of words, but you should have a rough idea of the number you usually write on one page. Your handwriting must be reasonably good. The handwriting of candidates who obtain a credit or higher grade is usually better than that of candidates who fail Use simple and accurate English. Good English style is simple. Avoid careless or grammatical mistakes.

Imagine that you had been captured by creatures from outer space to be taken to their planet. Describe your experiences.

I was camping when suddenly an approach- ing shiny object so dazzled my eyes that I could see nothing. When opened my eyes again, I felt a kind of dreamy surprise. For I found myself surrounded by some thin and very strange figures. One of them spoke to me and he was speaking our language. He told me they wanted to take me back to their planet to carry out an important experiment. He waved something like a magic wand to me and I began to feel a strong force pulling me toward and into their spaceship.

I soon discovered that I was in a cabin made of heavy metal with all sorts of machines and instruments. I could feel that we were moving very fast. As I looked out of the curved- shape glass windows, I saw what seemed to be fading stars and something that looked like the earth but only in a small shape. It suddenly dawned on me that I was travelling in space. The spaceship-climbed higher and higher. on the course set by the creatures. It gained speed until it approached some wonderful mountains which were so different from the

gentle hills of the earth. The spaceship finally landed. The side of the ship was torn wide open and I was thrown out by a strong force. Then my limbs became weak: Soon I lost my

-consciousness.

Strength returned. I opened my eyes. At first I could not see clearly although the light was gentle. Then I found myself lying on my camp site and I could see the same creatures above. I made an effort to sit up. One of them began to talk to me. He said that I was not useful to their experiment and so they had brought me back to earth again. Having said this, he waved to the other creatures and they completely vanished from sight within seconds.

Give reasons why you would like to abolish the transistor radio,

Ever since the transistor radio has been popularized to the extent that vritually every citizen can afford to own one, there is much greater indolence and negligence and many people in society suffer as a result. Take for instance you are in a restaurant. The whole cooking team may be so absorbed in listening to their favourite radio programme that they can easily sprinkle an overdosage of soda or salt into the food they are preparing for you and thus spoil your whole meal. Again, the quality of service may decline sharply during periods when horse racing results are being broadcast. Broadcasting can easily distract the attention of workers on duty and the result can be disastrous when a taxi driver is moving ahead at high speed or a barber is shaving his client.-

Over the air, one can often listen to the tantalizing commercials on liquor and cigarettes. Doctors, parents, and psychologists claim that these commercials should be taken off the air because they are too persuasive in inviting children to start drinking and smoking. A better thing to do would be, of course, to abolish the transistor radio.

- Radio programmes for educational purposes, sometimes do more harm than good. By know- ledge, we mean that which we get through asking and learning. Without one or the other, what we get can hardly be called knowledge. This really means that until we understand any. thing thoroughly, we cannot be said to have Tearnt it. What is taught by means of the radio may not be understood by the listeners. This is so because they cannot ask questions and as a result they learn very little. Besides, to have ⠀ vague understanding about something · can produce harmful consequences. Lastly the broadcasting of educational programmes on a large scale may put many of those who devote themselves to the sacred profession of teaching out of their jobs. But this will not happen if we abolish the transistor radio..
