Dear Students,

Each year's HKCEE English Language II must contain a number of multiple choice questions on vocabulary. The kind of voca- bulary asked is usually the words that often confuse Chinese students learning English as a second language.

As a teacher of English, I find such type of question very useful to the students as it draws their attention to the correct usage of words that look somewhat similar but should be used differently. Another virtue is that it urges the students to improve their generally poor knowledge of vocabulary, and, in particular, to learn the use of English words in context.

Today I am giving you an exercise on vocabulary based on my book "New Syllabus Objective English Tests". I hope you will try the exercise on your own and check the answers provided in next week's publication.
