Dear Students,

ENGLISH [2]

by T.C. Rebeiro Let's turn to Paper II of the HKCEE English Language today. Paper II is a test on comprehension and various aspects of language such as structure, usage and vocabulary. It is important to point out that some new elements have been introduced into the 1979 Paper II examination. A thorough analysis of the 1979 examination paper will bring to light the following characteristics:

1. Two comprehension passages of ap proximately 400 wards each but of contrasting style and subject matter will be set. Ten multi- ple-choice questions will be set on each passage, making a total of 20 questions for this part of Paper 11. This is a major change considering the fact that only one comprehension passage was required in the old syllabus,

Another significant change is that whereas in past examinations five distractors were set for each multiple-choice question, in the new syllabus, only four will be given.

2. About 45 multiple-choice questions on English usage will make up the remaining part

of Paper II with special emphasis on:

(a) Response

(b) Short Comprehension

(c) Phrasal Verb

(d) Choice of Word

There is no better way to familiarize yourselves with the type and nature of ques- tions set in the coming Paper II examination than to do some exercises set along the same lines as the 1979 examination paper.

Read the first passage very carefully and try to choose the best answer to each of the questions at the end.

Compared with most Asian countries, Hong Kong is better off in the provision of Health services, but comparison with the developed countries shows that there is a great nged for improvement.

Yo

Rapid population. growth in Hong Kong will continue to pose great problems for the provision of health services and facilities. It is estimated that by the end of the century Hong Kong's population may reach 6 million. This means that provision of health services will have to increase two times or even three times if they are to reach the standard of developed countries.

The process of redistribution of population as new towns are developed calls for further expansion of health facilities in order that they become easily accessible to the people.

Another problem is the constant rise in the cost of health services. This, combined with population increase, makes it more difficult to meet planning goals for more extensive and better quality health services.

The changing age structure also has a bearing on the provision of health services. While the steady progress in maternal and child health care has made a significant contribution to the remarkable decline in infant mortality rate, this service must be maintained and further expanded if it is to meet the demand resulting from the increasing number of females in the reproductive age group. In this context, family planning services are essential in order to safeguard the health of the mother and the child as well as to slow down the natural growth of population. The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong, a voluntary or ganization, has in the past decades played a significant role in educating the public about the advantages of family planning while at the same time providing readily available services. In 1973, the Government also began to include this service in its health scheme as an integral part of matemal and child health care. Ex- panded family planning services through the joint efforts of the Government and the FPA will undoubtedly bring about improvements iri family health.

Now read the second passage which is of contrasting style and subject matter to the first one and then try to choose the best answer to each of the questions at the end.

Albert Taylor was as badly affected as the next man by the petrol shortage. Long queues at petrol stations were considered normal and there was no guarantee that there would be any petrol left by the time one got to the head of the queue. Each petrol station was being given a fix allotment per period of time by their suppliers. If they sold out their allotment, they had to wait until the next one was due. Partly because he didn't like queues and partly be cause he had the national interest at heart, Albert decided to conserve petrol by using his bicycle. It was old and decrepit and had been lying in the shed at the bottom of the garden for years. He found that with disuse the cycle needed overhauling. The tyres and tubes had rotted; new brakes were necessary; some of the spokes were so badly rusted that they needed to be replaced.

He bought all the necessary parts, re painted the whole cycle and repaired it himself. It took him a week working in the evenings up to 10 o'clock. When he had finished it looked like brand new bicycle. Everything had cost about £20 but he thought it was money well spent. The running costs would be minimal, When be finished it he went for a ride. He mounted it with great pride and reverence and set off.

He had not cycled for years and found himself wobbling too much for safety. Traffic was heavy and cars were whizzing past him uncomfortably close. It only needed a wobble at the wrong time and he would be sant flying. He had not had much exercise in the last few years and after a quarter of an hour was huffing and puffing. On his way back home, while going along a fairly narrow road downhill, he saw a car overtaking another travelling towards him. There was barely room for two cars let alone two cars and a bicycle. Although going up hill, the car was travelling very fast, Albert saw death bearing down on him. There was nothing left to do but to swerve off the road. He ended up in a ditch. He suffered only a few cuts, but his cycle was a complete wreck. He had to carry it home. He put it back in the shed and thought that while the majority of road- users were motorists, cyclists cycled at their own peril.
