industrial deversification.

By industrial

diversification" is meant that.

our industries can be

diversified by way of two

directions, namely,

diversification of industries

and product and diversification. of export market.

Firstly, diversification of products and industries means that local Industries must develop more new lines of production, Since then, the quality and design of the industrial products must be improved in order to increase. the value added to each unit of our export and to avoid the direct competition of other Asian Countries.

Secondly, diversification of market means that local industries have to try to find more new export markets so as to expand the domestic exports to more foreign countries.

Question: What is industrial

diversification? Why is it of

great importance to the Hong Kong economy?

our

In recent years, Hong Kong's level of economic activities fluctuates with world trade. Our domestic exports to western countries are nowing facing severe restrictions. The European Economic Community has imposed quetas on textiles, which is the largest export industries in Hong Kong. On the other hand, Hong Kong economy now faces the keen competition from neighbouring countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Philippines because these Asian countei countries ganerally can enjoy the advantages of lower industrial rent, lower wages. and more government. assistance:

Internally, our economy development has also been hindered by limited supply of land, shortages in the supply of skilled labour, lack of industrial training energy crisis and devaluation of local currency.

To deal with the above internal and external difficulties, the Government has recently advised local industries to adopt

An Industrial:

Diversification Advisory Committee has been set up.

in Oct. 1977 to investigate the policies that can be taken to study the feasibility of industrial diversification in

Hong Kong.

Industrial diversification is of great importance because it is favourable to our. domestic exports. As our exports are usually labour-intensive, local domestic exports are less competitive with those

of the neighbouring countries with cheap labour and land because our production costs have been rising due to increasing wages and rents.

If our industries can develop to more new lines of production, local domestic exports would be increased continuously.

Further more, our exports should no longer rely on the markets of

United State, West Germany and a few Western countries. It is because a small economic decline in those countries will, always cause a sharp drop in domestic exports to them. It is dangerous to let our exports volume stable, it is advisable for local ¦ industries to search for new. markets which have potential demand for our exports. "It is only through this can exports grow up at a satisfactory rate.
