a. Causes of stream pollution
in Hong Kong
Stream pollution is quite a serious problem in Hong Kong, especially of the rivers that flow across or nearby urban and industrial areas, such as in Hong Kong Island, New Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun. One of the main causes of water pollution in those streams is domestic water disposal. The used- water, which always contain detergent or human waste, is returned to the rivers as sewage efflent. This poses a great problem. Besides this. streams in those areas are also polluted by industrial waste, especially those from Jeather making and dyeing in industries: Water used after these industrial processes contains chemicals which are Charmful to living creatures

Certain rivers in the New.. Territories are badly polluted too, eg in the agricultural regions of
Long, Tai Po, Fanlingen
Shatin and Tung Chung. Streams in these areas. may be polluted by agricultural waste, Owing to. the use of chemical fertilizers and insecticides, water after irrigation may contain chemicals.
Mining activity is also responsible for water pollution in those outlying
areas. Streams near mining areas, such as the Ma On Shan iron mine, are polluted by the waste from the mine.
Finally, streams at or near popular picnic grounds
are badly polluted too, these at Sai Kung. The
problem is mainly caused ay the lack of civic consciousness. of the people in Hong Kong. Many streams are polluted by the people's bad habbits,e.g. throwing rubbish into them.
b. Wàys to minimize stream
"pollution
In order to minimize stream pollution, laws of. environmental conservation should be enforced. Domestic used water and Industrial wastes especially those rarmful residual of chemical industry: like: mercury, should not be discharged into streams. To tackle with the problem of
waste disposal, the government should construct
a perfect network of
artificial drainages. The factories, perhaps, should neutralize the chemical wastes and regulate the rate, of discharge. The farmers have the same responsibility, too.
Besides, technical treatment of waste matters. should be encouraged, e.g. waste matters can be burnt or through other means to make them into fertilizern
There should also be constant test to assure-the quality of the water. Some pollutents in water may be reduced by mechanical filtering and chemical treatment.
Afterall, it is also the duty of every Hong Kong citizen to clean his environment and not to throw rubbish into the streams.
