Unit 14; Advice and Suggestions
for the Candidates
This will be the last issue
of the present series.
You are now facing the School Certificate Examination which is one of the most criti- cal examinations of your car-
eers, I hope you all have done thorough revisions by now.
Many candidates have under- stood that the only road to pass examination well is by hard work, but I would like to remind you that the way to pre- pare yourself and the technique of examination-sitting are also very important. Hard working gives you confidence while proper preparation and skilful examination-sitting help you to score high marks. Here are some reminders and suggestions which may assist you to achi- eve your best performance at the examination.
About the Examination:
The examination consists of two papers.
Paper I will consist of conventional questions. There will be one compulsory question in this paper. In the past few years, candidates had to answer: question 1 (the compulsory one) and attempt two more from ques tion 2, 3, 4 and 5. It seems the situation will be the same in this year. However, you have to look over the directions be- fore beginning to write any- thing
Paper II will consist of about 60 multiple choice ques- tione, all of which are to be attempted.
The time allotted to both paper I and II is 13 hours each
How to Prepare for the Exam
Keep your physical and men- tal health. An examination tests more than your. know- ledge. It test your mental discipline and emotional stability too.
2. Plan your time for the final revision according to the syllabus.
3. Revise the materials by look
through your notes and the underlined parts of your text-book. Summarize the main facts. Organize the materials into meaningful relationships Concentrate your time and attention on the material you are not aurė.
Practice the past examination papers and their respective answers. This helps you un- derstand how to answer and what to say,
5. Don't waste time and energy
by worrying or arguing small details with friends.
The Night before Examination
Avoid strain and fatique.
2. Review briefly and quickly all the materials, that you have reviewed during the preceding days.
3. Then go to bed, relaxed and
confident.
Don't expect to learn any- thing new the next morning. It is too late for that,
5. Get the wheels of your mind
turning so that when you face your paper, you are ready to start, certain that you have prepared well, confident that you can now do your best.
How to Talie the Examination.
1. Follow all the directions
exactly.
2. Read the questions. Compul- sory questions must be done well.
3. Choose the questions in which you. feel the most confidence.
4. Check your timing. Devide
your time according to the relative value of each ques- tion.se
5. Mark question mumber and
subtitle clearly.
6. Present your answer concise- ly and precisely. Do not give irrelevant materials. 7. Write legibly and neatly, 3. When all attempts have been
nade there should still be about five minutes left for final checking and review. Be sure you have written your candidate number.
Attempting a Conventional Question
1. Read the selected questions.
carefully to ensure that
you really understand it. 2. Underline all the signifi-
cant parts in the question, and obey them completely. *.g. What colour change" of
the solution would you expect to see in test tube ce sivé šregsons for the obenZO.
Give and explainyfour WAYS, in which the fros adapts itself to living. en lang.
3. Write to the point always
with short, sharp sentences Describe everything orderly
4. Be careful of spelling mis- takes, particularly of bio- logical terms. Do not give a plural name when the struc- ture is singular (e.g. villi for villus)
5. For experimental and graphic
questions, please refer to unit. 11 and 12.
Finally, to all those who find the present series of value I wish the best of good fortune in their forthcoming examination and in their future careers.

Reasons for the small ex- ploitation of forest resources in Indonesia
The rich timber resource has been exploited very little because the trees are usually of mixed stands, making it. difficult for selection. The thick undergrowth, the dense growth of climbing plants and parasites and poor communica- tiona make these forests difficult to penetrate or even inaccessible, The hard wood is also difficult to fell. Siace population is sparse and diseases and insecta are widespread in this region, little labour is available. Moreover, in this primitiye area, due to the lack of capi- tal, only very low level of technology and poor technique are employed. Systematic development of this area is late because of the insular nature of the country, exploit- ation is limited to a few islands only.
Reasons for the rapid exhaust of forest in New Zealand
The rapid decrease in forest resources in New Zea- land is partly due to the commercial exploitation during the Colonization of the
Lumbering European settlers, is highly developed there since it is mainly temperate coniferous forest.
The coniferous trees are soft wood, the trunks are tall, slender and thin, therefore, they can be felled easily. The usages of the trees and the demand for them are high too, such as pulp and paper making and construction, Resides this, the rapid exhaustion is also ́due to the careless burning of the Maories, the damage caused by volcanic eruptions and the need for clearing for the expansion of agricultural, and pastoral activities.
Measures undertaken by the Indonesian Government
The 5-year plan and the 10-year development programme set targets for the expansion. of timber production. There are schemed to survey and exploit forests, and to research, and investigate into forest potentials, e.g. for. making rayon, paper, tannin, plywood and synthetic fibres.
The Forest Inventory and Land Development Centres have been set up by the Indonesian Government. They take up the responsibility to plant
various species and carry out. the work of reforestation for industrial use and to control. felling of trees, These work are helped by improved communications.
The government also
encourages overseas invest- ment and introduces numerous improved technology.
Measures undertaken by
the Governemat of N.Z.
The New Zealand's Govern-
AN
mont has been keenly aware of the deficiency in timber production resulted from the indiscriminate felling which leads to domestic timber. shortages. Remedial measures focusing on reforestation and conservation of forest resources are being enforced. The
New Zealand Forest Sør-
which includes the vicajet Forest Research Institute and a staff training centre at Rotorua, was established in 1919. It is responsible for conservation of both natural and exotic forests, increase of forest resources" and control and noxious animals.
a. Favourable Conditions:
of Site A
1) There is no other
suitable site in Hong Kong.
2) The sea there is deep
enough for large oil tanker.
3) The pier is not
necessary to protrude into the sea.
There is në direct effect on the main beaches.
5) There is ample space for the construction of the refinery and other related activi- ties as we 11.
Its proximity to the
Its proximity oil tanks on Ap Li Chau is an advantage too.” The refined oil can be piped to the tanks in. Áp lí thau, from where oil, is N transported to other parts of the Colony of exported elsewhere.
7) It is near to the sea,
water can be obtained easily
for cooling
purpose...
8) It is not far from the
urbanized area.
9) There is supply of
electricity and water. 10) There is enough labour
supply from the settle- ments on the island.
11).
1. The sea near by has
not yet been polluted.
Unfavourable Conditions of Site A
1) The average elevation
of the NE part is 53 m. The construction of an oil refinery at an elevated arda means higher cost of product- ion as considerabis
electricity should be 'consumed to' pump up the crude oil from oil tanker and water for cooling from the sea. The refinery is situ ated at a site leas than 200 m. from the Ta Peng Village, Pak Kok Kau Tsuen and Pak Kok San Tsuen, noise pollution is sure to be a serious environ- sental problem. As there are no hills and ridges surrounding the site to reduce the noise, the Yung Shu Man Village and the southern part of H.K.
·Island will be affected as well.
The construction takes up as very vast ares. Though most of it is still undeveloped, however, as it is quite
near the urban area, it is a potential recreational area for the urban dwellers “ The scheme threatena a considerable loss of recreational land,
Several intervillage linkages will be cut.
The effluences are dis- charged into the East Lamma Channel of which" the flood tide equals ebb tide, therefore, the wastes will ensily accumulate in the sea,
Advantages of Site B over Site A
1) It takes a smaller se
for construction.
2) Vast area of undevel-
oped land can be reser- ved for recreational purposes.)
The low ridges and hills. in the N, E and S can help reduce the noise produced.
Effluences can be dis- charged to the West. Laws Channel of which the ebb tide is two time greater than the flood tide. Thus, the wastes can be carried away easily.
5} As the relief here is
lower, cost of product- ∙ion in lower too as
lesser electricity for the pumping of crude oil and cooling water is needed,
The construction of pier and breakwater on the t western coast is easier as it is sheltered from the direct attack of the prevailing easterlies, Land transportation from Pak Kok Tsuen to other villages will not be obs truc ted.
8) The scenic beauty of the island as viewed from the southern part of H.K. Igland can he preserved.
