1. Comprehension and Reading
How many times you should read the compre- hension passage depends on, first, the degree of difficulty of the passage; second, the type of langue
the writer uses; third, the nature and the topic of the passage, and fourth, the reading power of the reader:
In doing comprehensions, it is important that you should chanse passages on various topics and of dif- ferent nature. You must be able to, and prepared to, handle any passage with reasonable case. This can
only be acquired by con-
stant practice.
On receiving the ques- tion paper in the examin- ation, read the passage until you have a general understanding of it before you attempt any questions.
An average student may have to read the passage at least two or three times in order to get the general meaning of the whole passage. Some students, under time pres- sure, feel quite at a loss. They t cannot concen- trate; they are afraid. that time will be ruining. out before they can finish the passage is a result, they jump from paragrah to paragraph. And that is why they have missed so many important points. Remember that what appear in the latter part of the passage sometimes may help. to understand what you dir not understand in the first few paragraphs. Just keep your head cool and take your time.
For minor details, you have to refer to the passage from time to time as you go on with the questions,
It is sensible that you read the passare very quick- ly in the first read. The purpose is to find the theme, and to know what the passage is about. Mark the key sentences or ideas in versil Tien vou may read the pass- age the second time, and then the third time. You must read very carefully and at the same time you must think critically what the writer wants to convey to you.
When you read quickly, your eyes travel faster. There is one advantage : you are reading phrase by phrase or sentence by sentence. Your understanding, therefor will be better since you do not bother too much about the meaning of an individual word (which you may not know). You are looking for thought units the first time you read the passage.
When you read relatively slowly the second time, you are looking for details. You have to consider the meaning of individual words or ex- pressions.
You may read it several times more, and think over all the points again.
IT. Comprehension and Understanding
In the Examination, you. must pay attention to the following:
1. The writer's attitude
This is particularly important if the passage is one of argumentation. Sometimes the writer's intention is expressed quite clearly in the passage. But not all writers are so butspoken Sometimes, the intention of the writer is very subtle. In this case, you have to be very careful.
2. Understand the passage

Sometimes you will be asked to pick a correct choice which best sunS up the whole passage or a certain paragraph; sometimes you are asked to pick out the main points of the passage.
Sometimes the writer may deal with several things or develop sever al ideas at the same time. Sometimes contra- sted points are includ- ed in the argument. If you come across a com prehension passage of this type, you should exercise particular: care to analyse its content. You have to find out how all the ideas are related in the context.
3. Vocabulary
Very often, you are asle ed to give the meaning of a certain word or a certain phrase as used in the passare. We all know that even a very simple word (in fact, the simplest word) may have different meanings if it is used in ano ther context. In giving your answers, it is
essential to give the meaning as used in the passage.
