(4) Discuss the economies of large-scale production. Explain why some small firms still exist nowadays

Economies in production can' be created within a firm itself when output- increases. It seems certain that in all firms, average cost falls to some extent over low ranges of output as output rises.

A large-scale firm can have a better chance to enjoy the following: types of economies of production: 1. Economies in the use of

factors of production To produce a large level. Bof output, a.firm has to use more quantities of: Labour force. Greater, "divi sion of labour will conse- quently introduced, A large

firm can be able to employ fully qualified specialists and advanced machinery.. which are usually large in size and indivisible, Large scale production too can m makė a more economical use of its materials, for what might be waste to a amall firm can often be used by large firm in the manufact- ure of by-products.

2. Economies in administra-

tion:

The increase in product- ion of a firm necessitates a greater division of labour and specialisation. Managers and supervisors in a larger firm may be able to achieve a more scienti– fic, efficient and better management.

3. Marketing economies

A. Large firm can. general. ly buy more cheaply than a small firm, for it can buy its raw materials in bulk, So it usually enjoys disco- unt in the buying of raw materials and component parts, Similarly a large firm is in a better posit- ion to advertise its pro-: ducts in sales promotion, for it can afford large advertising expense than small firm.

4. Economies: in finance. Generally larfçe firms

can borrow money from banks at a lower rate of interest since they are regarded as the safer borrowers. 5. Econonies in researcil

A large firm can afford to have its own research department and personnel: to study the betterment and innovation of its products. 6. Economies in welfare.

A large firm can be able to provide long-run, exten- sive welfare facilities and. better working conditions. to workers

Despite the above advant- ages enjoyed by large fiiime small firms can still exist in some industries because of the following reasons:

1. The size of the business tends to be smell:(a)if the. work involves the provision of personal services, such as those of the doctor, tlie dentist, and the solicitor: (b)where the work can be done only by oraftsmen. 2. Where there is only a Limited demand for a common dity in the market, small firns can supoly enough. quantities for it.

3. In some forms of produc- tion, cost rise quickly as output expands a little. Thus the optimum scale.
