(b) THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE
OF A
re rock contains pebbles or fragments of rocks which drotrude at the surface. As the nebbles are usually made up of fragments/ of various rock tynes, their sizes vary. NO definite beading planes can be seen.
It is a tyne of sedimentary rock which has been formed along the former sea. coast as a result of deposition by water" The irregularity of the surface and the absence of bedding vlanes show evidence of immature sediment tation. The nebbles of various sizes, with little sebsequi ent sorting, are. cemented together by finer materials or clay, or become a solid comnacted rock when under Dressure. To the writer's point: of view, breccia may be acceptable as the ̇emphasis of conglome
erate is on its rounded constituents, by comparison with the angularity of breccia. However, these is no precise diyision. (c) THE FORMATION OF B
N.B.
Dyke, as a form of occurence of the hya- byssal igneous rocks, is a sign of igneous activity. It is formed when the molten magma fills the vertical joints or faults in the earth crust, and is solidified at last
when cooled. As it is

the hedding lanes of the darent rock, may be a marked diff- erence in their resi stances. When affected by denuation, it will either stand up as a ridge (where the dyke rock is more resist- ance then its adjacent- rocks) or be worn away to form Furrow (where the dyke of rock is: less resistance than its adjacent rocks.) CC Figure 2 is the annual rainfall man of H. K.. The mad shows. that rainfall in H.K. is mainly concentr ated around higher neaks, e.g. at
Tai Mo Lantao peak: Shan and Ma On Shan. Such a distributión indicates an oro- graphic effect. The
high peaks form bar- riers to the onshore winds which come mainly. from the.. pacific Ocean. As the moisture-laden winds meet the mountain" barriers, the air current will be forced to rise, its temp- erature is reduced until saturation voint is reached. Condensation then.. takes place and clouds are formed. The water droplets in the clouds will become bigger with further ascent. In time they will become too big and heavy to be sustained rain begins to fall. This tyõe of rain is known as relief rain. REASON FOR THE LOWY AMOUNT OF. RAINFALLAT D
The rainfall at D is co-paratively low-
It is because D is a lowlying area located in the N.V. part of .K. As the orevailing winds that blow to H.K. mainly cose from the last; D. is thus sheltered by the hills in the east

When salaries were very low, two or more generations of one family were forced 113 Bry Bugether but this no long unavoidable. The combined wlasses of husband and wife are often sufficient to perna ther to rent their own home. This has added to the number of people looking for fate, which arenes - home, adily obunable. Private building fams, on the whale, are out of all keen to build homes for lese wealthy people. Tenants prepared to pay less than $1,000 a month have had a dalë ulese finding accommodation. The Government, has been handicapped by a shortage of funds with which it could rectairs terel mód build thousands of new homes. The community has always needed new schools, hospitals. roads and other facilities, so howing has had to compare with these for acht money at it wwlable. The east solution to this lack of homes lay in permáning squatter areas to develop. Gradually more positiva steps were taken to deal with the situation, Squatter areas were brought under Governacul control and a start was reade with the building of Ressivement estates. Admittedly, these new estali were far fram ideal. Becse the lack of funde, the amount of space provided for masts family was very small. Blacks af fate lacked sparate washing and talet facilities. Cooking often had to be done on a kmal hakuny. Bui at list these new blocks did provide a hosse of some kind.
Step by step, improvements wege made to Reseulement extern. Fach new estate pluvided evidence of en drance in standards. More space was provided per person. There was a greater variety of typen of fis. Proper tollet facilities were provided, even if sowne washing ruumis rentained on a communal bab. Water is polluted by agricultural waste, too, water after irri– gation also contains. chemicals because of the use of Chemical fertilizers and insecticides.
Mining activity is: also responsible for
·water pollution. Waste from mines, e.g. from the Ma on shan iron mine, is also a main
cause.
Another contribut ing factor is the lack of civic consciousness on the part of the population. Many strem ams and the sea are polluted by people's bad habbits, e.g. throwing rubbish into them.
Last of all, the sea in H.K. is also polluted by drifting oil which soilt from. shins in the Harbour. (b) REASONS FOR THE LOC- ATION OF THE HIGH ISLAND RESERVOIR
The High Island is.. chosen to be the second reservoir in H.K. formed by damming a sea inlet. The choice of location is not surprising since it is the only remaining: untapped catchment. area, in H.K. This catchment area is a large one, too. Beside, there are many other favourable factors. As

At alternate employment to people and the construction of permanent roads will lead to improvements in.communications. Thus the formerly remote villages will be linked to the urban areas. In the near future cafter the completion of the reservoir, the catchment area will be afforested and become a park, and the reservoir wil1 become a recreatio- nal area. This will in most cases bring. an increase in pro-
