·A." Perfect competition
Perfect competition is an economic model of a market possessing the following characteristics:
I
A
Small size, large numbers- Every economic agent in the market to be so small, relative to the market as a whole, that it cannot exert a perceptible in- fluences on price. From the stand-point of buyers, this means that each consumer taken individually must be so unimportant that he can- not obtain special conside- ration from the sellers. From the standpoint of sellers, each producer to be so small that he cannot affect market price by
changes in his output.
Only if all producers act
in the same way at the same
time, changes in quantity.
will definitely affect
market price.
II. Homogeneous product
The product of any one sel-
ler in a perfectly.......
of buyers that the products
of the various sellers are not the same. whether the products are actually
different physically or not.
There are various sources
of differentiation; actual physical difference, location,.
service considera-i tions, reliability, personal attitude, etc. But despite preference, relative prices exert significant influences. on the choice of products, and many buyers will select the sellers who offer the lowest prices. in monopo-. listic competition market, relatively small changes in prices produce relatively large changes in sales. Hence, each seller regards the demand for his product as relatively elastic.. Marketing activities play a major role in monopolistic competition. Differentiation is essentially created by branding and packing, and reputation is largely created by selling activity. Selling activity not only increases the demand for the product of the firm, but
also lessens its elastici ty
by attracting customers more closely to the particular brand..

Fach resource required can move in and out of the market very readily in response to pecuniary signals. First, labour must be mobile, not only geo- graphically, but among jobs. Second The requsite labour skills are few, simple, and easily learned. Third, the ingredient inputs are not monopolized by an owner or producer. Finally, new firms or new capital can enter or leave an industry without an extrordinary difficulty. IV. Perfect knowledge- Consumers, producers and resource owners must possess perfect knowledge of the commodity if a market is to be nerfectly competitive. B. Imperfect competition
Any market which cannot have all the four requistic
characteristics of the per- fect competition is said to be an imperfectly competi- tive market. It can be classified into three types monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition, according to its degree of imperfection a. Monopolistic competition
Monopolistic competition has three primary charac- teristics
1. product of the various
sellers are different tiated
2. the number of sellers is
sufficiently great that each acts independently of the other firins 3. entry of new firms is
relatively easy. Unlike perfect competition, individual sellers do have influence over market price. The various firms recognize the existence of competi- tion as a group, which imposes
a ceiling on the price which they can charge and sell a particular level of output.
A requisite characteristic: of monopolistic competition is differentiation of pro- duct. The significant feature of differentiation, is the belief on the part
