From the diagram, we can find that Wuhan which is a river port and an industrial conurbation comprising three cities: Hankow, Hanyang and Wuchang, is situated at the confluence of Yangtze Klang and Han Kiang in Central China.

Wuhan has become the in- dustrial conurbation “because. of its location. It is the node of a water network which consists of Yangtze and its tributaries. Also it is ser- ved by asystem of railways linking up North and South China e.g. the Peking-Canton

of navigation by 10000 tone ocean-going vessels in sun- mer and in winter 2000 tons ship can make use of the waterway. Thus, Wuhan acts as a transhipment point where smaller and larger ships meet. Wuhan succeeded in being a river port for the Middle Yangtze Basins (Tung-Ting L. Basin, Poyang Lake Basin and Red Basin) form the hinter- land of Wuhan. Since Wuhan is located in the richest agricultural region, 50 manufactured and agricultural products are collected and distributed from and to ita neighbourhood.

We can also find that be- sides serves the function of a river port, Wuhan also de- velops into commercial and industrial complex for many favourable factors. Since Wuhan is located at the rich mineral resources region in China, high-graded iron is obtained from its S. E. major iron mining region Tayeh, coal grom Pingtingshan in Honan, and Pinghsiang in Kain- gei, ferro-alloy minerals from the south Yangtze hilla and limestone in the neighb- ourhood, also lead and tinc from, Changhing, Manganese, mercury from Hunan, Kaolin from NE Klangsi, Tungsten in S.Kiangai. These abundant supply of raw materials have

conduced to its growth in heavy/industries such as shipbuilding, iron and steel worka, heavy engineering, machinery and agricultural equipments On the other

hand, with cotton for tex- tile from Han Basin, wheat for flour willing from the North Yangtze Bank provinces, rice and vegetable oil for processing from those lake basins, light industry is also well developed. This triple city Wuhan is named administratively in 1950 and becomes one of the 3 national iron andsteel in- dustrial regions.
