The following is the main
points of a lecture given by
a visiting professor in the
University of Hong Kong, with
Bone modification and addition:
HISTORICAL CONDITIONS OF NAZISM IN GERMANY
The Second Reich Period 1870– 1918
1. No bourgeois revolution
until 1918; the middle class excluded from poli- tical responsibility until then.
2. Failure of the 1848 revolu- tion and liberal ttempt to unify Germany discredited liberalism and made the upper bourgeoisie turn back to the support of the military feudal-bureaucratic power elite which held political power.
3. Apart from the interlude of
1848, co-operation between bourgeoisie and state power could be dated back to the Reformation. Bourgeois needs were met by the authoritarian state of the Second Reich under Bismarck and later William II, so there was no con- flict of interests between
state and capitalists. The lower middle class ( amall business-men) also received protection from the government of the Second Reich, and the successful alliance of bourgeoisie
and feudal military aristo- cracy enforced pre-indua- trial social values on the

policy of the victors of
World War I. caused an
ultra-nationalist, right-
wing reaction in the German middle-class. In the main,
however, Nazism succeeded
because of the Great Depression.
12.Fascism, including Nazism,
should be analysed on three levels: (1) its social
basis, (2) the expectations
of the traditional power elite from it, (3) the
objectives of the Fascist leaders.
13.Hitler's only basic ains.
were (1) conquest of
Eastern Europe (2) removal of the Jews by extermina- tion or flight.
14.Two traditions were evident
in German history from 1871 to 1945. One vas
authoritarian, the other was liberal. The Second Reich saw the triumph of the authoritarian tradition. The Weimar Republic saw the triumph of the liberal one. And Hitler's Third- Reich saw the synthesis (misture) between the old authoritarianism and the new forces of popular nationalism.
Western Germany Today 15. Western Germany now is
more stable because it has cast off Prussia, which becane East Germany · (Prussia was the least industrialized and there- fore most conservative, especially the Junkers, Prussian landed class, were predominant). 16. Big estates of the old
aristocracy underwent a thorough revolution arid were destroyed, paving the way for establishing real democracy.
17. High prosperity and
Western integration have also weakened nationalism in West Germany.

The Weimar Republic
8. in 1918 the Social Democrata
compromised with the old ruling groups to prevent a genuine revolution, as that would have led to anarchy and intervention by the victorious Britain and France.
9. Yet, no democratic revolu tion has yet succeeded so far in Germany under condi- tions of a highly industria- lized society.
10.Nazlism had its greatest
support from the middle
classes. One of the most
interesting definitions
of Naziam is," Nazism was
an extremism of the centre."
