Then he found another five penos on: the ground and put that in his pocket too. He was very happy now. He stopped digging for a minute and shouted to his wife, Rebecca, come quickly. Someone's hidden a lot of money in our garden, I'm finding it..

Housing in Hong Kong is provided by both the government and private land developers. The former provides Low Cost and resettlement estates to the average people while the latter private houses to those who can afford thesi. Besides this, the government" also plays the following roles in the provision of housing in Hong Kong.

1) Torn planning

A Town Planning Board was appointed by the Governor to guide and direct the continual development of new townships in Hong Kong, so that adequate provisions of roads and com- munity facilities, like schools and recreational centres are provided.

Urban Renewal

In 1964 Government passed the Crown Land Resumptions Ordin- ance in order to acquire land for the redevelopment of slum areas in Sai Ying Pun and Yau Ma Tei Districta, etc.

Redevelopment works are going on with old resettlement areas in Shek Kip Mei, Wang: Tau Hom and Chai Wan to improve the living environment of these.

areas..

Rent Control

The government also legislates laws to control/rent on private housing to protect the tenants. In December, 1973, an ordinance. passed to the effect that any rent increased has to be appro- ved by Commissioner of Rating and Valvation Department,

10) To assist tenants of the muïti

storey buildings to manage their own properties

The multi-storey buildings ord- inence was passed in June, 1970 to enable the tenants of these multi-storey buildings to arg anise their own voluntary mana- gement committee for their own affairs.

The following voluntary housing agencies alec provide low cost housing to the public:

1) The Hong Kong Housing Society. established in 1948, is among the largest voluntary organi- sation providing housing vo more than 130,000 persons. The Hong Kong Model Housing Society, established in 1950, also provides housing to many people in North Point. The Housing Building and Loan Agency Limited, financed by

the Common- the government., wealth Development Corporation and four local banks, extends loans to private citizens to purchase their own houses. The Tai Koo Docks and China Light and the Hong Kong Yau lla Tei Ferry and a number of big public companies also provide quarters to their staff.

Thus we can see that with the- help of these voluntary housing agen cies,

the government and the private developers solve some of the housing shortage in Hong Kong.
