What are the different forms of division of labour? Explain the advantages and disadvantages of division of labour.

Division of labour is one by which the process of production is divided into separate iasks, each of which: is undertaken by a Worker or a group of workers. With the emergence of factory system, there is a gree.t .ex- tension of the principle of division of labour. `: It has been

extended

from

family to town, from town to regio11,

and from region to country. The

different forms of division of

labour are:

(1) Simple division of labour. This

refers to specialisation of work. within a factory.

(2) Industrial specialisation. Tha

refers to the specialisation of production within an industry. (3) International division of labour. ?his refers to the specialisation. along regions or countries. The division of labour leads to great increases in output.- The ad vantages are:

(1) Greater skills of the workers.

Division of labour reduces a man's work to some simple operation. The :constant: repetition of a task leads

to great dexterity and greater efficiency of work.

(2) Sayne of time. The time wasted in moving from one operation to another, in putting down one set of tools and picking ip another i给 eliminated.

(3) Saving of skill. By keeping to E single operation, it is possible for a worker to specialise in the work for which he is best suited, (4).The greater use of machienry. As [R complex process is broken down).

Despite the advantages, the divi- sion of labour is not without its own roblems. Its disadvantages can be discussed as follow:/ (1)Monotony of work. The constant

repetition of some simple opere t- ion by a large rumber of workers, results in the los of job satis- faution".. A worker has to repeat the same sovement every few minut- es. Work becomes monotonous and dull. The routine repetition: makes the work less self-fulfilling

(2) Loss of Craftsmanship. The divi. si. of labour makes possible for the extensive application of mach "iziery. The worker is no longer a

craftsman but an appendage to a machine. he degree of craftsmen- ship required of the worker Tend to decline.

(3) Increased risk of unemployment-

The division of labour requires a worker to be trained to perform a epécific task. The more speciali. sed-the worker, the less adapt bl he is in case of changes in the techniques of production. Jhus, the worker is more liable to be unemployed if there is a decline indemand for his ability.
