Writing a Composition
(7)
Like speaking, writing is a form of expression; but unlike it, writing is, by and large, formal. Errors are unacceptable in good and formal. works and are to be avoided in all circumstances. We may classify thes errors into three different categor jes2
1. Wrong diction
2. verbosity
3. faulty grammar
The use of a word or expression in a sentence, which is improper or uri− conventional either because its meaning does not fit the sentence or inappropriate to the occasion or because it is considered to be un- acceptable in formal writing, is
generally known as wrong diction. Errors of this type are common in the writings of mainly non-English speaking students. A few examples are probably in place here: Example 1.

Students tend to equate synonyms which are simply words. of similar (ut: never the same) meaning. Strict- ly speaking, no word can be replac ed by another word. in all cases without altering the contextual meanings in. writing. And in many cases it sim- The word large! ply would not do.

idea is acceptable and a large. idea' is not:

Verbose writing involves repetitious.
elements which add little or nothing. to the meaning of the sentence, nore do they help for dramatic effect or. special emphasis...
Example 3..
The two objects are the same identical things. Faulty grammar refers to expressions or word forms which do not conform to the grammatical or structural usages demanded by formal writing. Students are familiar with errors of this category.
Example 4.
Example 5.
A number of studente is absent from school today.
John broke the glass and he tell me so.
The following are a few points which, if understood aid remembered, may: prove to be beneficial:
Limit yourself to a smaller frontage but go deeper into the. subject you write about.
2. Stick to the same tense when you' write if you think you have a tense problem.
Start with simple and short ser- tences and stay with a few sente- nce patterns for writing practice.
4. A sentence is like a bag which
:will contain only one object. DO
not try to put more than one thine into it. It tears easily.
5. A composition is like a box which
will contain only bags of the same kind.
