A composition can go wrong in many :different ways. Let us have an anat ony of the following piece of faulty writing. The topic is taken from HKCEE 1974 English Composition Paper. (Syllabus B).

Say which school subject you like most and which you like least, giv- ing reason, Suggest a new subject, not. taught in your school to replace the subject you like least, giving. reasons for your choice.

We study many different things at school: English, Chinese, French, Mathematics, Biology, History, and Geography.. And we have studied all these since the age of ten or eleven. Why do we have to deal with so maiy? Why 'can we not just concentrate on fewer but go deeper into each of them? (1) (2)

Among all the school subjects T like mathematics most. T like ita sophistication and complexity which ia (3) both a challenge and a source of joy to me. In fact, the more difficult a mathematical problem is, the greater the joy will be when it id solved.

fault.

(4) Unnecessary shift in tense - is to be avoided at all costs.

(5) Using too many commas. A full-

stop is proper. Remember: The comma used in Chinese writing is equivalent, in the majority of: cases, to the full-stop sign in English writing.

(6) Touching upon a good point, but

no development.

(7) Verbosity.
