The problem we are going to look at to-day: involves Tenses. The sequence of tenses in a sentence often cause a lot of trouble even to experienced. writers. You must remember not to change past to present tense or vice versa: without first know- ing why you want to do so.

The following examples will show you what are some of the problems that cause us to think twice before we attempt to write. 1. He announced that he. (gave,

gives) that prize to the best student for scholastic achieve- ment.

The correct word to use is:

gave' as it is shown that at the time when he made the announcement, he had already made the decision.
