Above all the import of opium caused great resentment among the Chinese be- cause it caused bad physical & moral health & outflow of silver. After the Opium War, there was, imreased discontent among.
the Chinese because they consider ed the Opium Treaties (of Nanking & Bogue) as unequal Treaties. Besides being an insult to the Chinese sovereignty, the 5% import tax made foreign goods cheap. &. harmed possible development of Chinese industry. The war indemni ity made China poor. The Coolie: Trade & expensive, convoying sys tem caused suspicion & discontent. Besides the extra-territoriality claim gave foreigners privileges• Furthermore the opium question was unsettled. As a result of the increased resentment, the Chinese especially those in: Canton frequently attacked & killed. foreigners. They were not punished but instead were praised by the Emperor.Anti- foreim activities were widespread &finally the Arrow War was brought forth.”
