(b) The average shoot length of Set A of beans at 2 a.m.on day 4 is 37 mm, and that of Set B is 69 mm.

(c) The curve of Set 4 shows that the shoot lengths of beand increase gradually in normal daylight conditions. Since Set B was placed in a dark cupboard, and more auxin is formed from the growing apex of the shoot of a bean seedling an increase in auxin concentrat

ion results in a rapid rate

of elongation of cells of the shoot, so the curve record of Set B indicates that the shoot lengths of beans grow more rapidly than those of Set A.

(a) Mathematically using two or one hundred seeds in each set of apparatus may obtain a more accurate result in the experiment. The increase in number of seedlings will affect the growth-rate not only because there is a more competition for water and

mineral materials but because

of other constant environmental

conditions-which probably be

disturbed.

(e) Three conditions which must be constant for both sets. are a suitable temperature and sufficient supply of oxygen and water..

(f) At the beginning of the experiment, the growth of the shoot of Set B is rapidly, this is due to more concentrat ed auxin produced in the shoot apex and the high concentrat ion of auxin will favour the growth of the shoot. (By the absence of sunlight which is essential for both processes of synthesis of chlorophyll in leaves and photosynthesis), the growth of the seedlings is slow and their leaves turn. yellow.

(g) If the seedlings had been grown in a laboratory with windows on one side only, and the growth of the shoots would turn toward the windows 1.e. the direction of light illumin- ation, this growth response of the seedlings is termed "pasit- ively phototropic".

Usually phototropic curvatur es are particularly conspicuous in shoots of seedlings growing in situations in which they are, exposed to unequal illumination on opposite sides. Under such circumstances the growing shoot

-

bend toward the direction of the more intense light source. It is found that the positively phototropic curvature of a... shoot is caused principally by greater elongation of the cells on the shaded side of the shoot than those on the illuminated side. Since cell elongation is known to be influenced by the quantity of auxin present, such phototropic reaction is due to the effect of light upon the distribution of auxin in the shoot. It is possible that. one-side illumination makes the auxin to move from the

illuminated side to the shaded side of the shoot.
